The appreciation of the upcoming New Year and what lies ahead. Tweet me your resolutions @brycemcvay, I’m looking for additional ideas. So far my favorite came from my British girlfriend, “I’m giving up desserts, except chocolate…that doesn’t count.” (You really have to read that out loud in a British accent to get the full appreciation). But sentimentalities aside, it begins the best time of the year for Sports. It’s the last week of the NFL regular season and the last week of true DFS competition (of course, the addicts will be partaking in playoffs leagues). With the NFL playoffs comes bowl season including the inaugural college football four team playoffs; ESPN you can no longer ask the question “who’s in?” I must say I do think the committee chose the most entertaining matchups from a neutral fan standpoint and I haven’t been this excited since the 2001 Miami Hurricanes. (Love the new 30 for 30 The U: Part 2). The finale of the football seasons is like having dessert before dinner, but the NHL and the NBA still appease our needs until my single most favorite sporting event, March Madness, kicks in only a couple months into the New Year. Yea, it’s good to be a sports fan and even better when you can make some dollhairs while watching. So let’s end this DFS NFL season properly by clean sweeping every double up we enter. I saw a sea of green last week as I cashed in every league I entered and if you followed my guidance, especially my Saturday tweets, then you too cashed handsomely. An important side note, I will be aiming at players that actually have something to play for. I also haven’t seen all that much value open up due to injuries, other than S-Jax. I...

Daily Fantasy Football Week 16 Picks – DraftKings – “Three Tiers!”

Want picks for FanDuel, Draftster, and Draftster as well? Check em out. I will be providing a slightly different strategy to my picks. Specifically, I am going to give three tiers for each position. I can’t put an exact price range on where mid-level picks begin and end, but generally if two players differ by over $1,000 then they are separate tiers. The chief reason for these tiers is to show that there is more than one way to skin a cat, or this case win a double up. If you choose plays based on tiers and create a short list, then this gives you multiple ways to form a lineup. Start creating lineups using a high-end QB and see what you produce. Then start over with a high-end RB and so on and so forth. Compare the lineups and make the call on which one you feel is the highest producer. This method will eliminate the problem of getting to your last one or two positions and simply picking the highest priced player at those remaining positions. If you get down to the last few spots and realize you have too much or too little cap space left then it’s back to the drawing board. You want to avoid picking plays because you have the room. Stick to your short list. One final note, I only play DraftKings and I have noticed that DK is not offering very many leagues that include the Saturday games. My favorite style of league are the guaranteed prize pool double-ups, thus I am only offering picks for the Sunday games as these are the leagues I will be playing in. I wish everybody a very special and happy holidays as we creep near 2015 and look forward to bringing in the New Year with my family and friends. Quarterback Generally, the QB position is underpriced this week. I don’t think there is much reason to get creativity. Nevertheless, I will still create multiple lineups with...

Daily Fantasy Football Week 15 Picks – DraftKings – “It’s a Skill Game.”

Want picks for FanDuel, Draftster, and Draftster as well? Check em out. ---- For many, it’s the semi-finals of your yearly fantasy leagues…if people still play those. To all of those lucky enough to survive throughout the bye weeks, the early round draft busts, the Wednesday night stat corrections, and the litany of injuries; Congratulations! Of course with DFS there are no such things as bye weeks, drafts, or stat corrections and the only injuries that actually affect our results are of the “in-game” variety. The uncontrollable, unpredictable anomalies that occur in nature. The most appealing aspect of daily fantasy sports is that your chosen player only needs to survive four quarters, not four months….and here comes my rant. Unlike your standard yearly fantasy league, DFS has a large amount of “predictability” and predictability itself turns a game of LUCK into a game of SKILL. Just as an astute poker player would spot a pattern in his opponent’s betting strategy, a top-notch DFS Pro spots trends in a player’s stat lines…Now I know every parent out there is screaming, “Daily fantasy sports and poker will never be more than gambling in my book!” Let me attempt a compelling step forward. I studied actuarial mathematics for three years in college, and worked in the field for another five years as an actuarial consultant. In as little words as possible without further boring you, let me try and explain what an actuary effectively does. An actuary starts with a whole bunch of historical data. Then, he or she observes patterns and trends in this data such that a product (mostly insurance) can be priced and sold to a consumer. Actuaries have no idea if the product is in fact priced properly until additional data is collected on the future outcomes. Now, my point is not that insurance is a mechanism of gambling and the actuaries/companies that sell insurance products are the proverbial “House.” Under a capitalist economy, insurance is fundamentally necessary and it...

Daily Fantasy Football Week 14 Picks – DraftKings – “Back to the Basics”

Daily Fantasy Football Picks for Week 8 - DraftKings DFSR is excited to bring you Bryce McVay. Want picks for FanDuel, Draftster, and Draftday as well? Check em out. After a 5 week hiatus it’s “back to the basics.” A common poker maxim declared after making an untimely bet. In my last article in week 8 I expressed my love for the game of poker and well, an obsessive compulsive degenerate with an addictive personality can only take on one hobby at a time. So, for the past month DFS drew a distance second.   It wasn’t till I received a few Tweets about my weekly posts (or lack thereof) revealing that some of my readers were missing my vast wealth of knowledge. I now realize I was missed dearly and that everyone was lost without my invaluable advice…That seems like something Matthew Berry would say, right?! “Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.” I am quoting the late great Jimmy Valvano and he was quoting the American poet Ralph Waldo Emerson. The only incentive I get for writing my weekly articles is the satisfaction of helping out my readers. To say the least, it’s pure enthusiasm that drives me to write. Ultimately, it was my readers (all 14 of them; this is a guestimate, it could be closer to single digits) that gave me my enthusiasm back, so fans, I say thank you! Ok, so what in the heck do I mean when I say back to the basics? I mean for the rest of the year I am done with the lottery ticket known as the “Millionaire Maker”. My picks are for value and the fact still remains, if you find players that achieve 3.0 value then you’ve found a profitable play in all cash formats (as opposed to GPP formats). I will be writing one article a week from here on out and I will be posting it either Friday or Saturday because “value” plays often do not reveal themselves until after the respective week of practice. I plan on being very active on the...

Daily Fantasy Football Week 8 Picks – DraftKings – “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again”

Daily Fantasy Football Picks for Week 8 - DraftKings DFSR is excited to bring you Bryce McVay. Want picks for FanDuel, Draftster, and Draftday as well? Check em out. One question I am constantly asking myself is, “Has daily fantasy sports hit its peak?” Based on the revenue projections of FanDuel and DraftKing’s, clearly the sites expect much more participation in the future. As I have mentioned in my previous articles, this is my third year of playing Daily Fantasy sports and every year I see a spike in advertisement and player participation. Recently, I have been playing a lot of poker. I mean a lot. No limit Texas Hold’em specifically, cash game and tournaments. If you didn’t already know, the poker world and the daily fantasy world have melded quite nicely. The competition, the analysis, even the user interface of DraftKings reminds me of a 2014 online poker website (college; those were the days). When playing poker for 8-12 hours in a row, you’ll find yourself in constant conversation about sports; betting lines, the weekend’s big game, the local team’s disappointments (Tampa Bay Bucs and Rays for me). However, every time I bring up daily fantasy to a table of 9-10 players, very little speak up. One out of the ten normally seem to know exactly what I am talking about leaving me to guess they actually have an online account. Another two or three admit to knowing that it exists, but their basic questions show they’ve never actually put together a team. The rest of the table either refuses to take out their headphones or shows genuine interest in something they’ve never heard of before. The fact is that daily fantasy sports HAS NOT reached its peak. In my opinion, not even close. If daily fantasy sports can stay legal under the “fantasy loophole” then I expect to see more and more new players, easier competition, and bigger payouts. I did not post a Thursday article this week for two reasons. Massive amounts of poker being the first while the second was the oddities of last...
