Stack Targets

The Los Angeles Angels vs. Sean O'Sullivan
Editor's note: Yes, the Angels were chosen before they scored a zillion runs Saturday night.
So, this is a little awkward. The system spat the Angels out as the top overall stack for Sunday, and they went ahead and put up 21 runs as of this writing Saturday night. So I mean, you probably don't need to be overly convinced here. The Sox/Angels game has the highest over on a non-Coors Sunday, and for good reason. Not only are these two teams pretty good at hitting, but man, these are some garbage pitchers going as well.

Leading the garbage train is one Sean O'Sullivan. Few people know that O'Sullivan was actually drafted by the Angels, and those that do lost track of him after he sucked incredibly for year after terrible year until finally being picked up by the presumably reluctant Red Sox leading into the 2016 season. Well, this has somehow been the worst season of O'Sullivan's career, and his career 4.36 K/9 is about as bad as humanly possible for someone that a major league team allows to pitch.

As for the Angels, you likely know what they can do by now. Their core of Trout, Pujols, and Calhoun make an obvious choice for the stack up the middle, and Daniel Nava and CJ Cron are interesting as well. Either way, I suspect this will be a chalk stack of the night.

The Boston Red Sox against Matt Shoemaker
The other half of the highest total on the day, and another plainly obvious stack. There is a bit of industry fatigue on the Red Sox right now, especially after they essentially no showed against one of the league's premier batting practice guys in Hector Santiago. Well, this is a time where keeping a steady hand can pay dividends. Shoemaker is actually a guy whose stock is rising in my book - he's been better in every conceivable way this season, and a little more BABIP luck could have his ERA in above average range.

But is it enough to hold down the Red Sox? I say no. They've got too much juice up the middle, and while this current incarnation features a lot of right handed bats, a core of David Ortiz and their smattering of young right handers has them topping the league in terms of wOBA against RHP this season. Keep an eye on Travis Shaw here as well - if he slides up the lineup as they go back to facing a right handed pitcher, he's a very interesting option.

The San Francisco Giants vs. Robbie Ray
If you want to slide a bit off the beaten stack path today, my top choice is the Giants. They're tied with a bunch of teams with the second highest total on the day, and are a sneaky stack team on the road because their prices are frequently depressed by their brutal home park. Well, they've got the majors' 12th highest wOBA on the road this season, and that doesn't account for the fact that Arizona has been the best hitters' park this side of Coors Field.

So what about the match-up? Well, it's a little complicated. One on hand, Robbie Ray is absolutely capable of disastrous starts. His 3.65 BB/9 and 1.25 HR/9 put him in spots where he constantly seems to be on the brink of giving up a huge game. That said, his 10.65 K/9 can also bail him out plenty as well. All this to say - stacking the Giants might not be for the faint of heart, here. I'm not sure I'd go whole hog, but starting with Posey (duh) and building out the guys who happen to bat around him in is a nice place to start.

Also considered: The D-Backs in a great match-up with Albert Suarez.
