Not only are there only four teams, but also there are four good defenses involved. There’s not much of an edge to be had on such a short slate, other than taking advantage of overlap in GPPs by playing dart-throws such as Corey Brown and J.J. Nelson. Below, I essentially ranked the players at each position, but in many cases, I listed cons along with pros. QUARTERBACK Cam Newton - FD 8500 DK 7200 Opponent- ARI Newton projects as the highest-scoring QB option on the short slate, as his Panthers have a team total of 25.3 – by far the largest of the four teams in action. Combine that with the fact that Newton led the NFL with 45 total TDs (35 passing, 10 rushing) during the regular season (good for 83% of Carolina’s offensive TDs), and Newton has the most TD upside of any player on the slate. Of the four defenses that will be in action this Sunday, the Cardinals finished the regular season having allowed the most schedule-adjusted fantasy points allowed to QBs. Carson Palmer - FD 7700 DK 6800 Opponent- CAR While Newton projects to score the most fantasy points of any QB, Palmer may have the most upside relative to his cost, as he comes at a discount to Newton. As of this writing, Panthers-Cardinals has an over/under total that is currently 3.5 points higher than Patriots-Broncos, which is good news for both passing games involved. Carolina’s defense will likely be able to shut down one of Arizona’s boundary WRs (typically Michael Floyd and John Brown) with Josh Norman, but may struggle elsewhere, as they are starting their fourth-string and fifth-string cornerbacks. Last week, Carolina permitted 366 passing yards and three TDs to Russell Wilson. Tom Brady - FD 8100 DK 7400 Opponent- DEN The Patriots’ team total is 23.5 (second highest on the slate) and Brady has accounted for 78% of their offensive TDs during the regular season (and all three in last week’s victory over the Chiefs). Denver’s defense is stout, but Brady was able to post 280 passing yards and three TDs on the Broncos back in Week 12, and that was without the services of Julian Edelman, who is now healthy. Peyton Manning - FD 6700...

START YOUR FREE TRIAL On the Divisional round slate, the game that sticks out is Cardinals-Packers, which has by far the slate’s highest over/under total (50); no other game has an over/under above 44. I didn’t write up any Packers because there is not much separation between them. I like other QBs better than Aaron Rodgers, but the Packers should be considered in GPP lineups. Although they are more of the “dart-throw” variety. If Davante Adams (knee) does not play, it may spell trouble for Randall Cobb, as he usually kicks outside when Jared Abbrederis (Adams’ likely replacement) enters the game, meaning Cobb could see the shadow treatment from Patrick Peterson. Another possibility if Adams sits is the Packers going with more two-back sets featuring John Kuhn at fullback, which helps the value of Eddie Lacy and James Starks. Keep an eye on Adams’s status as the week progresses. QUARTERBACK Carson Palmer - FD 8900 DK 6500 Opponent- GB Palmer will begin his attempt at a Super Bowl run with a home game against the Packers, who allowed Kirk Cousins to throw for 329 yards en route to the top overall fantasy performance for a QB in the Wild Card round. In the regular season, Palmer finished first in yards per attempt (8.7), fifth in passing yards per game (291.9), and first in total QBR (82.15). Arizona’s team total is 28.5, by far the highest on the Divisional round slate. Tom Brady - FD 8600 DK 7400 Opponent- KC Brady will play his first playoff game since last year’s Super Bowl victory against a strong Chiefs defense that shut out Houston last week. However, there is seldom an easy matchup in the playoffs, so it is not a bad idea to bet on Brady and head coach Bill Belichick having devised ways to attack this defense during their two weeks off. During the regular season, Brady led the NFL in TD passes (26) and was fourth in passing yards per game (298.1). Cam Newton - FD 8700 DK 7500 Opponent- SEA On a short slate, TDs can swing the pendulum even more than on...

START YOUR FREE TRIAL Playing DFS in the NFL Playoffs means combating not only limited options due to a short slate, but also due to the fact that most playoff teams have good defenses and therefore present tough fantasy matchups. I’ve found that short slates lend themselves better to entering more GPP contests and less cash games, especially 50/50s and double ups. In GPPs, there will tend to be a ton of overlap, and nailing a low owned player that is one of the highest scorers of the day can make a world of difference. DeSean Jackson – who scored a TD in four of his last six games excluding Week 17 – is liable to run by the defense for a long TD regardless of matchup. Markus Wheaton has as many red zone targets (11) as Antonio Brown over the past six weeks. James Jones is averaging 11 targets per game over the past three weeks. Keep in mind that in short slates you do not necessarily need to use your entire salary cap, especially in GPPs. Remember, the safest cash game plays are not necessarily the players who will finish with the highest scores of the day. Most entrants tend to use their entire cap, which can end up hurting them if a bunch of players in the mid-range and lower salary tiers put up higher or comparable scores to the most expensive players, which is likely simply because the middle and lower salary ranges comprise the majority of the player pool. QUARTERBACK Ben Roethlisberger - FD 8400 DK 7200 Opponent- CIN The NFL leader in passing yards per game (328.2), Roethlisberger has the most upside yardage-wise of any QB on the slate. That upside is bolstered by the fact that DeAngelo Williams (ankle) is banged up and the Steelers may rely on the passing game even more in lieu of pinning their hopes on backup runners Fitzgerald Toussaint and Jordan Todman. The Steelers’ team total is 24.5, the highest on the slate. Russell Wilson - FD 8600 DK 7000 Opponent- MIN Over the last seven weeks of the regular season, Wilson...
