Daily Fantasy Baseball Picks for ScoreStreak 9/3/14

DFSR has partnered with ScoreStreak: a new, innovative style of DFS play. Gone is the salary finagling, mixing and matching, and hair-pulling that goes into setting lineups. ScoreStreak simplifies the process in an easy-to-use interface. Employing a prop-pick style, ScoresStreak leagues are specific outcome dependent with three categories: Total Bases, Hits, and for pitchers, Strikeouts.

Total Bases

Focusing on the evening slate of games today.
Jose Abreu
Trevor May has been an abomination since hitting the big leagues, putting up a mid 5's xFIP (his ERA is something I don't even want to say) and walking a ton of batters. Basically, when teams face May they see him for the first four innings and then it's on to the backend relievers. May has a high walk rate which doesn't play well to the targeting total bases, but he also allows so many base runners that guys like Abreu are bound to see an extra at bat. Abreu's cooled off some, and teams are pitching around him but I'm still on him for some total bases today.

Adrian Beltre
A guy I'm always taking a hard look at when he's facing a lefty. Beltre's crushed the lefty platoon this season with a .974 OPS and a 166 wRC+. He faces Jason Vargas, a below average pitcher with a low 4's xFIP and a K rate less than six batters per nine. Vargas pitches to a lot of contact. And while he isn't the worst arm in the world, Beltre's historical splits against lefties are enough to buy against him.

Hits

Adam Jones
Nick Markakis
Our system has no love at all for Dylan Axelrod even though dude has shown some positive results his last couple of games. Basically, we don't tread too much into the "what have you done for me lately?" realm, choosing to rely on historical numbers when it comes to pitcher performance. This of course has it's issues, but much work has been done on a pitcher changing his stripes (i.e. it doesn't happen too much). So goes it for Axelrod who has a long track record of mediocrity. I'm willing to bet it continues and I'll take two guys in this spot with low walk rates that make a decent amount of contact against righties. Jones especially never walks (K's a bit more) and Markakis hitting at the top of the lineup should be in a good spot to grab a hit. I'm loving the Orioles today.

Strikeouts

Andrew Cashner
In the evening slate pitching is a bit of a wild card. I don't see anybody with the real solid chance of hitting 9K's. So I'll be playing it safe with the six and seven slots to try and lock up some points. Cashner faces a struggling Diamondback team without any real threats in any part of the lineup. Since Goldschmidt went down they've struggled immensely and come in the bottom third of the league against righties. Cashner isn't a big strikeout guy, only about seven strikeouts per nine but he K'd eight last time out against the Dodgers. Thinking he should be able to hit the six mark today if he lasts seven or so innings.

Jacob deGrom
deGrom is a bit more of a K guy with a slightly worse matchup. The Marlins rank in the tip third of the league against righties and have a dude named Giancarlo destroying souls in the middle of the order. But the Fish also strike out a ton against righties, about 24% of the time. deGrom's pitched well this season, striking out close to 8.5 batters per nine and rocking an xFIP in the low three's. I think the ballpark will help keep some runs in and have him hang around later in the game. Target him for the 7K slot.
