Total Bases

Victor Martinez
Swinging a hot bat this year and Chris Young isn't the kind of pitcher that cools off hot bats. Chris Young doesn't throw fire. He throws flammable objects that explode off bats. He sucks. I only wish the Tigers had a few more lefties so we could capitalize on Young's ineptitude. VMart is a guy that I'm targeting though. When projecting total bases, we need a double or more to hit the top mark. I'll take a solid hitter against the worst pitcher going every time. Funny enough, Miggy rates far below VMart in our system today on projected total bases. I suspect more folks will be on Miggy. Take Martinez.

David Ortiz
He and Martinez rank so much higher than everyone else on our list today. They are 1 and 1A in total bases. The only thing that worries me a little about Ortiz as compared to Martinez is Papi faces Odorizzi who strikes out and walks a lot of batters. Those two things make getting the bat on the ball a little tougher. But Ortiz is so high up in our projections that I don't think I can fade him in this spot.
 

Hits

Jacoby Ellsbury
When targeting hits we want to make sure the opposing pitcher is someone who pitches to contact and doesn't whiff anyone. Hey Kevin Correia, good to see you again. Ellsbury, while maybe not a favorite to collect actual hits, is a favorite to have his bat on the ball. Though his K rate is slightly elevated this season, that's mitigated by Correia's refusal to produce the strikeout.

Melky Cabrera
Is piling up the hits this season, and that's been his MO. Our system really likes his chances against a relative unknown in Aaron Brooks. Brooks didn't strike a lot of batter out in the minors and there are few reasons to expect he'll have prolonged success in that realm while toiling away in the majors. Melky on the other hand is much, much better against righties. Melky doesn't strike out too often, nor does he walk much. That's a nice recipe for collecting a hit or two tonight.
 

Strikeouts

Masahiro Tanaka
Michael Wacha
I hate to go complete chalk here but these two are just so much higher in our system for projected strikeouts that I'd feel silly recommending anyone else. These guys will almost definitely be numbers one and two in your leagues. They'll be mixed and matched, but for the most part, you'll see these names early and often. There's a steep drop off after these two studs. Both strike out more than a batter an inning and face teams who are prone to K.

Honestly, the third slot is going to be a relative toss up. There is no sure thing after the big two and you'll be deciding between a good pitcher with a bad matchup or a mediocre pitcher with a fine matchup. Will be interesting. Games will be won with the last pitching slot. And if you see a person in your league who doesn't have Tanaka or Wacha rostered in the first two spots, well you are in great shape going in.
