The Players Championship

TPC Sawgrass - Ponte Vedra Beach, FL
Par 72, 7,215 Yards

After a week off from stroke play events we are back at it with the PLAYERS Championship. Some refer to it as the the 5th major and it draws the best of the best on the PGA Tour as the field is jam packed with top 50 players in the world. The tournament takes place at TPC Sawgrass where it has been home to the PLAYERS since 1982. The winning score has been -13 the past 4 years so there is definitely scoring out there and also some opportunity for some bogey free rounds and birdie streaks which are needed for GPP success on Draftkings. Past performance here can definitely help identify guys who can manage the course well but more importantly I will be looking for guys with some good current form. This week I will be targeting All Around Ranking guys with some of the following stats.

  • All Around Ranking
  • Strokes Gained: Tee to Green
  • Strokes Gained: Putting
  • Ball Striking
  • Scrambling
  • Greens in Regulation

Tier 1 Targets (DK Price $9000-Max)

Rory Mcilroy - $13,200 (Vegas Odds – 8/1)
I am going to start with Rory this week as he thrives in the biggest tournaments against the best in the world. He started the year slow but recently he is definitely in #1 in the world form with a win in last weekends Match Play Championship, 4th at the Masters, T11 at the Arnold Palmer, and T9 at the WGC-Cadillac. He finished T6 here last year and T8 the year and with his stats below he definitely checks all boxes. His confidence is high and you should consider making a few lineups with Rory at the top.

  • All Around Ranking - 2
  • Strokes Gained: Tee to Green - 19
  • Strokes Gained: Putting - 68
  • Ball Striking - 11
  • Scrambling - 182
  • Greens in Regulation - 41

Jason Day - $9900 (Vegas Odds – 26/1)
Coming in under $10K seems like a bargain for the caliber of golfer Day is. He hasn't missed a cut this year and is coming off a 4th at the Zurich Classic with a -19. He has made 2/4 cuts here at TPC Sawgrass with a T19 and T6 in those cuts made. His stats in all 6 categories are Top 50 and 5/6 are Top 20. Insert him in your lineups!

  • All Around Ranking - 1
  • Strokes Gained: Tee to Green - 16
  • Strokes Gained: Putting - 42
  • Ball Striking - 19
  • Scrambling - 20
  • Greens in Regulation - 8

Henrik Stenson - $10,400 (Vegas Odds – 21/1)
When looking for a golfer who is great All Around, look no further than Stenson. His stats pretty much sum up all that is good when looking for a DFS golfer. His recent form has been good as well with a T19 at the Masters, 2nd at Arnold Palmer, 4th at the Valspar and T4 at the WGC-Cadillac. He has finished T34, T5, T15 his last 3 trips to TPC Sawgrass. I have a feeling Stenson could be one of the lowest ownership Tier 1 guys.

  • All Around Ranking - 8
  • Strokes Gained: Tee to Green - 1
  • Strokes Gained: Putting - 1
  • Ball Striking - 2
  • Scrambling - 43
  • Greens in Regulation - 3

Tier 2 Targets (DK Price $7500-$8900)

Hideki Matsuyama - $8800 (Vegas Odds – 34/1)
Another guy that stands out when looking at my 6 stat categories this week is Matsuyama. He covers all angles except putting and if he can catch a good week of putting he could contend to win. Last year was his first trip to TPC Sawgrass and he finished T23. I can see him matching that finish at worst.

  • All Around Ranking - 4
  • Strokes Gained: Tee to Green - 4
  • Strokes Gained: Putting - 114
  • Ball Striking - 3
  • Scrambling - 17
  • Greens in Regulation - 11

Brooks Keopka - $8100 (Vegas Odds – 76/1)
Koepka got eliminated in round 3 last week and played pretty well. He finished T33 at the Masters before missing his only cut of the year at the Arnold Palmer. He had a win and early success on the year and after recovering from injury he should be able to get back to that point. His stats only cement his status as a great Tier 2 value.

  • All Around Ranking - 20
  • Strokes Gained: Tee to Green - 27
  • Strokes Gained: Putting - 21
  • Ball Striking - 41
  • Scrambling - 127
  • Greens in Regulation - 63

Justin Thomas - $7500 (Vegas Odds – N/A)
Added to the field this week as the 1st alternate is Thomas. His price is a bargain considering the start to his rookie campaign. Coming off a T11 and T12 in his last two tournies he is on track to get a win soon. He makes a projected low owned GPP pick at a great price.

  • All Around Ranking - 6
  • Strokes Gained: Tee to Green - 38
  • Strokes Gained: Putting - 91
  • Ball Striking - 62
  • Scrambling - 64
  • Greens in Regulation - 67

Tier 3 Targets (DK Price $6500-$7400)

Daniel Berger - $7400 (Vegas Odds – 81/1)
Another rookie as my top Tier 3 pick this week. Berger has shown he can contend in tournaments with multiple Top Tens this year and he shows poise on the course. When looking at his stats so far this year I find it hard to stay away from him in any format this week.

  • All Around Ranking - 25
  • Strokes Gained: Tee to Green - 24
  • Strokes Gained: Putting - 102
  • Ball Striking - 10
  • Scrambling - 40
  • Greens in Regulation - 26

Jason Kokrak - $6800 (Vegas Odds – 101/1)
Coming into this week Kokrak has 2 Top 20's, 2 Top 10's and a missed cut in his last 5 tournaments. He will be a GPP play for me this week as most people will probably steer clear as he has had a few weeks off. His stats in 2015 are great considering his under $7K price tag.

  • All Around Ranking - 31
  • Strokes Gained: Tee to Green - 49
  • Strokes Gained: Putting - 54
  • Ball Striking - 63
  • Scrambling - 33
  • Greens in Regulation - 72

Tier 4 Targets (DK Pricing MIN-$6400)

Robert Streb - $5800 (Vegas Odds – 251/1)
I keep finding myself gravitating to Streb lately as his price is under $6K and his stats are highly ranked in alot of categories. His recent form has been awful to say the least(missed 3/4 cuts). I will be taking a shot again and hoping he is one of those 1% guys that sneaks through the cut and possibly gets a T30 this week.

  • All Around Ranking - 45
  • Strokes Gained: Tee to Green - 40
  • Strokes Gained: Putting - 78
  • Ball Striking - 34
  • Scrambling - 66
  • Greens in Regulation - 46
