It was a terrific Family Day weekend and now we are back for another Tuesday edition of Daily Fantasy Hockey. There are 8 games in the NHL tonight with some terrific matchups and a variety of goalies from top end elite options to lower end value plays. Jonathan Quick is slated to make his return but I would avoid in his first game back as it is a tough matchup on the road in Washington and there are too many plays that make great pivots at the top.

Goaltenders
Brian Elliott
Opponent - DAL
FD - 8900 DK - 8400
With Jake Allen sidelined with injury, Elliot has really taken the reigns and played terrific keeping the Blues in the thick of the playoff race. Over his last 10 games he has gone 6-2-2 with a .954 save % and a shutout. It is a tough matchup tonight and would think twice before using him in cash games but he makes a terrific high upside play for GPP's and could be lower owned tonight due to the matchup and price.
Cory Schneider
Opponent - PHI
FD - 8800 DK - 8300
Schneider is the goalie I will have the most exposure to tonight, especially in cash games. The Devils are home favorites tonight vs. the Flyers who they have beat twice already this year and the third game was an OT loss. Schneider has been terrific this year with a 25 win and the third best save %(.931) in the league behind Brian Elliott and Michal Neuvirth. The Flyers have struggled to score goals recently losing 5 of their last 6 games and in those losses have not scored more than 2 goals. Great spot for Schneider and the Devils tonight.

CENTER
Ryan Getzlaf
Opponent - EDM
FD - 8200 DK - 5800
He has been on absolute fire lately scoring 15 points in his last 10 games. He is still under priced on DraftKings where he only costs you 12% of your salary cap vs. 15% on FanDuel. He is as close to a must play tonight as any center on the board. The Ducks have a favorable matchup in Edmonton vs. the Oilers who rank 26th in goals allowed per game.

FD - 5500 DK - 6000
He has been a fantastic fantasy play for the Bruins over the last few weeks. He has 11 points in his last 10 games for the 3rd ranked offense in the NHL. He does lack the upside we are looking for due to his low shot totals and lack of powerplay production lately. He comes into this game having picked up back to back multi point games and gets a decent matchup in Columbus tonight.

WINGERS
Alex Ovechkin
Opponent - LA
FD - 10100 DK - 8900
While his point totals have been largely over shadowed by the terrific year Patrick Kane has been having, he has now passed Kane in the scoring race. Ovi is up to 35 goals on the season and has hit the back of the net 9 times in his previous 10 games. Even in a tough matchup he has the highest upside of any player on the board tonight.

Ryan O'Reilly
Opponent - OTT
FD - 4600 DK - 5900
He is a much better play on FanDuel tonight as he will only cost you around 8% of your salary cap vs. 12% on DraftKings. He has posted 3 multi point efforts in his last 4 games and has 10 points in his last 10 games. It is hard to find that production at such a low cost on FanDuel so lock him in tonight vs. the Senators.

DEFENSE
Dustin Byfuglien
Opponent - CAR
FD - 7100 DK - 6400
He provides a ton of upside tonight in a road matchup in Carolina. He has recorded 11 points in his last 10 games including three powerplay points and a short handed goal. He provides a nice floor averaging around 2.5 shots on goal per game has added value on FanDuel where he is capable of multiple penalty minutes(25 in last 10 games). Great option in any format tonight.
Cam Fowler
Opponent - EDM
FD - 4300 DK - 4000
He struggled with the offense once he returned from injury with six straight scoreless games but provided cash game value in that time averaging around 2 fantasy points per game on DK with shots and blocks. The offensive upside has started to shine through his last two games was he has picked up five assists in those games including 3 on the powerplay. He looks comfortable out there and gets a tasty matchup tonight vs. the Oilers who rank 26th in goals allowed per game.

McDavid/Eberle will be chalky tonight. Not meaning bad pick at all. Great for cash games but I would pivot away in GPP’s to get lower ownership.

I would add Boone Jenner to that stack as well. Skating with those two on a line. Should be a very low owned stack and Vegas has no favorite on the O/U 5.5 at the moment and Boston has been involved in 4 straight games that have gone over the total. Weak defense.

thanks for the insight, I’m new-ish to dfs and am trying to lock down my strategy for tonight, I had a couple good nights recently, top 10 in a couple of the big 3$ GPPs on DK and won a ticket worth 200 beans from a 3$ tourney for the 250k GPP today on DK so I’m stressing out trying to get this right!! That being said my preliminary lineup doesn’t seem to have enough stacks.
It’s hard not to take mcdavid/ eberle if they have another huge night, Andersen playing b2b after letting in 4 yesterday…
I’m liking santorelli, ehlers, j staal, jones, as well but think I’m better off sticking to some stacks.
feeling like anaheim needs a look against that oilers defense as well. Figure Karlsson is worth it tonight?
Normally I make selections with relative confidence but today all this excitement has my head spinning!
WAS and DAL look good too with those 5 1/2 lines but such an expensive top line.
Ya the price of McDavid/Eberle makes it so hard to fade. Was like when Crosby was $7000 on DK

Martin Jones is less on DK as well in TB who has been up and down.
I’m still working on my lineup Justin. I don’t mind that lineup except I don’t like Anderson either. Seguin is ok but Elliot has been hot but he is too cheap on fan duel. Make sure u start Schneider in your cash games. And for defencemen that is tough. I wouldn’t touch anyone vs Schneider and Faulk is too expensive IMO. I’m leaning towards phaneuf at 4700 he’s with karlsson on the #1 pp. definitely play perry, oreilly, and I like McDavid or ever or Ederle. Ryan is very cheap as well. I kinda like starting an Ottawa guy from each lines 1, and 2, and prob even phaneuf, I believe that ott buf game will be high scoring. Avoid Hoffman though as he’s bumped to third line. I’ll try and get my lineup here before 5 central time to give I at least an hour before lineup lock.
McDavid or Eberle I mean . You can consider both too , it’s kind of a tough night from my eyes

Marchand. He’s on fire. He’s overpriced on FD but I absolutely love him tonight. Also he is prone to get the odd misconduct penalty and several minor penalties. Sounds Chris . I’m just about to post my cash lineup for tonight on FD

Ryan O’Reilly is a near must play i cash. I also like Cam fowler on D as a cheap option. Getting healthier and starting to produce with back to back games with points

Ya good call by Chris. Fowler is a good play. I just like Ristolainen vs Ottawa slightly better . I like phaneuf but that’s the only seen vs Sabres. Lehner will be super pumped tonight. He’s been playing well. Plus the coach screwed the lines up and ruined most value.eiyther fowler or Ristolainen is good IMO. A little salary cap left over is ok. Don’t always go by that. Good luck

Oh Bergeron ended up playing. Damn it. And the ghost scores on Schneider. He is unbelievable this guy. The problem is his price is gonna go sky high. Bad start for my team so far. I can’t believe Schneider is only 20% owned in one of my 50/50
Damn it. I knew I wasn’t comfortable playing tonight. It’s still early. It it’s going bad. Sorry guys if u copied me but it’s early yet. I didn’t do any research until right before the game. I shouldn’t have played. Dumb. Ah well. Next time I feel like it’s a bad night like this I’ll just either not play or just throw a couple gpps out. These. If hrs are rare for me but they happen. There’s always a few good plays though, it’s just sometimes really tough to come up with a lineup u really like.

Schneider killed me. Would have cashed with another goalie. Can’t wait for the NBA to be back and then baseball 🙂 NHL DFS is so hard. Only one of the big sports where the top guys in the world can no show one or two nights a week. Only sport imo where it seems like if you want to cash every night you almost have to run multiple lineups.
It’s funny Thomas that I don’t really know nba but I’ve been going by the system and Doug and jame’s picks and I’ve been doing rather well. NHL this year has been really weird and very tough for dfs cash games based on a ton of unpredictability. Keep on trucking though. Experience helps. I am waiting impatiently for mlb though I tell ya. It’s the best IMO
Ryan. I’m not giving up.. just a tough sport. All the other sports have a few match-up proof guys like Westbrook who just show up every single game. You don’t get that in hockey and then you also have so many games where a team gets up 2 or 3 goals and the coach just goes to short shifts and plays for the win. Just tough to predict. Can’t imagine there is anyone playing one lineup who wins just about every night the way you see guys win in MLB, NBA each and every night.
Yes I agree Thomas. Hockey’s just a different sport altogether. It makes DFS even more fun. Every sport is totally different. I’ve had the best results over the last year and a half or so since I started playing DFS. I’ve had good results in the past with season long NHL. Same as every sport. It takes time to adjust.
I meant to say I’ve had the best results in NHL over every sport since I’ve been playing. Not my easiest because it has taken more time to adjust, but it’s all a work in progress.

It was a bad night again. I’ve not won since that first night. I will hope that the small slate pays off and wait for your input here as we approach face off. I take my wins and losses in stride. You won’t win those big jackpots but it’s the hope that makes it fun and I’m a gambler anyway
Side note my bankroll has disappeared so I am desperate for at least a $5 50/50 win.
I hear ya Justin, we are all gamblers in some way. We all want to win. Here’s a couple solid plays for tonight. I will post my cash game lineup on here before puck drop at 8 Eastern time. I only use one cash lineup every night. I don’t believe In hedging lineups for cash games. Just to let everyone know. This is the lineup that I use on fan duel, and I am risking my own hard earned cash on this lineup. Use at your own risk. To start Ryan Suter is a must start at d for 4800. I am gonna chose a couple Colorado guys and another Minnesota guy and a couple flames guys. Hudler seems like a must start to me at 5900 paired with either gaudreau or Monahan. The Rangers hawks game is gonna be tough to roster anyone because of the goalies. Panarin may have to be played at 6700 because he’s with Kane and he’s close to matchup proof as it gets IMO. I am stuck between varlamov and lundqvist for my tender. Carly has the easier matchup but Vegas odds expect lundqvist to give up less goals because he’s at home but man the Hawks are tough to start a goalie against. The Habs suck right now but man I can’t decide at the moment. I’ll be back later.

The wild scored 5 goals vs Van they got their touch back. I think it’s a good gpp play possibly but for cash o think it’s gotta be either varly or king Henrik.
And two Hawks vs the king isn’t smart IMO. Not on his turf. Yes they cleaned up vs the leafs but they stink.
I have almost completely stopped playing cash games in hockey due to the variance. Safety can be found with shots and blocks(DK) but if there are nights where there are tons of high scoring games and you dont have the guys that go for double digit points you still lose. The winning scores vary so much night to night. For this reason I have been playing the 3 entry limit tournaments. Making my 3 lineups each night(one chalky and 2 contrarian lineups). I have 4 or 5 losing nights a week but when I hit it makes up for those 4-5 nights and the weeks I win 2-4 nights really boost the bankroll. The only time I like cash games anymore is the short slates(4 games or less)
Hockey is very similar to baseball in that regard. If you go against the popular picks that everyone is talking about you crush it when those chalk plays fail and your low owned guys come through. You just have to be patient with that process as you will lose in the short term. It all goes bad when you start tweaking your process once you establish one. That was my issue for over a year. I would get a nice win on my 1-3 lineups then put 1–15 lineups in next two nights and lose most of my bankroll.
Very good insight Chris. I am getting headaches trying to make an optimal NHL cash lineup. Nba has been so much easier. I’m gonna keep sharing my lineups and my insight because I’ve still been doing pretty well considering last night and a couple other ones. Wow it is tough though this year and can u believe that it’s very likely that no Canadian team will be in the playoffs? This is not good Chris, just heartbreaking 🙁
Oh yea I’m not despairing at all, because all it takes is a good hit. So I need some cheap D men, cheaper RW so I can go with Lundquist at goalie

Ash instead of parise if go with coyle for much cheaper. Same line and 1pp. Ya Chris Dumba is cheaper than Suter and maybe even a better pick. Didn’t realize Suter moves up so high. If u need to go super cheap Spurgeon is even in play for 3300. Ash I don’t like 2 rangers either. The only guy im playing in Rangers Hawks game is panarin.
I hate the avalanche’s line setup. They take value out of every player and we don’t know which mine “actually” #1 . Like McKinnon on the 3rd line? Jeepers. Careful with Colorado guys but find the best one and start Barrie or Johnson.

Yep fading Kane. I may be changing my mind on things. I may start varly over the king. Chicago is too dangerous. Panarin looks good if I chose varly. I’m a Habs fan and I know that they stink and may even be tanking to try get a high draft pick. Price ain’t comin back. Varlamov and the avs should take care of em. Ok so coyle for sure and Dumba or Spurgeon based on salary needs. Hudler and either Monahan and gaudreau. Barrie and one or two more avs. Scrivens and the Habs suck I can’t deny it anymore. I’ll post my final lineup around 6 central. Games start at 7 central. Talk to y’all in a few hours. Gotta go to work.

Dan if u think that Kane and panarin are gonna score on lundqvist then start varlamov . That’s not ideal strategy. If u take lundqvist then u should only start panarin.

Very tough night for goalies. But I’m going with the king based on his 1.18 gaa .954 sv % in last 5 games and he stopped 32 shots in 3-2 win in Chicago last meeting. And by rule I don’t start anybody against my cash goalie here’s my lineup . I like the way it unfolded . Calgary Minnesota should get a few goals each so I am featuring 5 players from the game. Dubnyk is decent but weaker away from minny. And hiller is well kinda shitty. Gaudreau and Monahan stack I love. And I avoided chi vs pit because of the goalies. U should always avoid playing against elite goalies. Gaudreau Galchenyuk coyle iginla Monahan Granlund Dumba Barrie lundqvist. Here we go.

It seems like,every time i pay up for goalie i get burn……..going for backups in the future.
It’s almost the best way to go Ash for cash games. just wait for the late games. Carly’s given up two goals already. Maybe every goalie will give up a few . Too early to tell. The last couple nights have been tough to pick a goalie but almost always there is a couple standouts that will cost u a decent amount but almost always worth it. For example Crawford vs leafs the other night. More often then not there are a couple fairly easy choices like him. Tough one tonight but like I said its early

I like Chris’s idea of playing more gpp s. When they hit it can be a big payout. I’m gonna try more of that paired with a few cash games and not the 5 I did tonight. NHL has been very unpredictable lately

Thing with GPP is you have to remove the Cash Game safety blinders 🙂 Seems like every night the guys who win GPP have 2-4 guys that are less than 2% owned. Guy currently winning GPP I am in has 3 guys with less than 5% ownership and that’s with a really short slate where you’d expect every player to be owned…
Ya I know it’s crazy. I’m still gonna stick to mostly cash games though. I’m gonna stop overthinking. I’m gonna get on a hot streak soon I know it man
