Miami Heat at Charlotte Hornets

Analysis
After two decisive victories for Miami at home, Charlotte completely shuffled the deck in game 3. With Batum absent, many (including me) figured that we'd see more Jeremy Lin. Instead, the Hornets went big, shuffling more minutes to Frank Kaminsky, Marvin Williams, and Cody Zeller. Their big-ball lineup yielded an incredible 3 turnovers for the whole game, and won in spite of generally lousy shooting. What will game 4 hold? It's anybody's guess, but I'd suspect that it will be a fairly close game where starters play their projected minutes.

The big piece of missing information here is what's shaking with Nic Batum. If he misses Monday's game we can count on a similar minutes distribution to what we got in game 3. If he returns, it's sort of anybody's guess. These picks will be written assuming he sits once again.

Top Value Plays
Frank KaminskyFrank Kaminsky - FD 3700 DK 3400
Opponent - MIA
FD Proj. Pts - 26.24 DK Proj. Pts - 27.99
Kaminsky was the big minutes winner in game 3, and put up a solid 15 and 7 in a sort of startling 35 minutes on the court. The Heat struggled to keep up with the Hornets 2-big lineups, and it's hard to imagine Charlotte not at least trying this again given their game 3 success. Frank is still priced very safely, so we could see 5-8 minutes shaved off his previous total and he could still pay these prices. Easy play in any format unless we hear that Batum is back.

Marvin WilliamsMarvin Williams - FD 5100 DK 4800
Opponent - MIA
FD Proj. Pts - 28.58 DK Proj. Pts - 30.83
Marvin was finally Marvin again in game 3, going for 12 and 14 in 36 minutes. With his sea legs under him, he's all of a sudden looking very cheap. Again, he's a potential bust if Batum returns, and you can probably consider him rather volatile regardless, but I'm very interested.

Kemba WalkerKemba Walker - FD 8000 DK 8100
Opponent - MIA
FD Proj. Pts - 38.55 DK Proj. Pts - 40.27
I figured Kemba would shoulder more of the load with Batum shelved for game 3, and while he wound up with a very solid line, he was very close to putting up a monster. If the game stays a little closer Walker would have played 42+ minutes and put up an easy 5x points per dollar. I suspect that that's the kind of performance we see in game 4, again, assuming Batum isn't out there.

Hassan WhitesideHassan Whiteside - FD 8600 DK 8500
Opponent - CHA
FD Proj. Pts - 40.69 DK Proj. Pts - 41.37
Whiteside's been workmanlike against Charlotte's offense-first big men, putting up a narrow range of 39-42 fantasy points per contest in the first 3 games of this year's playoffs. As Charlotte goes bigger it's going to mandate more Whiteside out there, and the interesting thing is, they really don't have anyone that can hang with him on the boards or as a rim runner. We could wind up seeing one huge game before this series is over, but I like the floor here plenty.

Consider Courtney Lee.

Oklahoma City Thunder at Dallas Mavericks

Analysis
Game 3 went as close to how I figured games in this series would go in terms of game script and overall minutes, even if some individual performances continue to perplex. The Thunder won semi-convincingly, but not enough so that their big guys lost minutes, and everyone this side of Kevin Durant got fed. The Mavs, meanwhile, are a complete minutes nightmare. Williams was announced as the late starter, only to exit the game after playing a single minute. Well, they've finally shut Williams down, and hopefully we can just go off last game's minutes to project this series the rest of the way. Here's what we've got.

Top Value Plays
Kevin DurantKevin Durant - FD 10000 DK 10000
Opponent - DAL
FD Proj. Pts - 53.85 DK Proj. Pts - 56.95
Russell WestbrookRussell Westbrook - FD 10600 DK 11000
Opponent - DAL
FD Proj. Pts - 53.77 DK Proj. Pts - 55.73
Westbrook has been incredibly solid from a daily fantasy perspective, and Durant has laid perpetual stinkers. Still, on this slate, it's going to be tough to charge forward without both in there. Durant is now 14 for his last 53 from the field. Can that continue? The Thunder are playing one of the lousiest version of their offense that I can remember. Tom Haberstroh pointed out a terrific stat on a recent Lowe Post podcast, saying that the Thunder passed just 208 times in game 2 - their lowest of the season. Still, it's tough to imagine them combining for 80 minutes and now paying the same prices they kept all season long. I'll be rolling it back and expecting a huge Durant game one of these days.

Enes KanterEnes Kanter - FD 5000 DK 5400
Opponent - DAL
FD Proj. Pts - 25.18 DK Proj. Pts - 25.89
Kanter has put up back to back 7x points per dollar performances on these prices, so it's probably time to acknowledge that Dallas' back up bigs (looking at you, Mejri) simply can't keep up. Looks both safe and full of upside from where I'm sitting in that it's very tough to picture his minutes going the other way given how stale OKC has the potential to look on offense.

Dion WaitersDion Waiters - FD 3800 DK 3600
Opponent - DAL
FD Proj. Pts - 19.02 DK Proj. Pts - 20.18
Waiters has quietly been doing exactly what the Thunder were praying he'd do all season - stand there and make a shot or two. Back to back games with 20+ fantasy points, and a game-script proof 27 minutes. On a short slate with few super-cheap value plays he's a top consideration for me.

Dirk NowitzkiDirk Nowitzki - FD 7000 DK 6300
Opponent - OKC
FD Proj. Pts - 36.43 DK Proj. Pts - 38.54
Every team in the playoffs has a guy that they look at and say, "If we lose, it won't be because we didn't get this guy the ball." For the Mavs, that's Dirk. He played a season high 40 regulation minutes in game 3, and the 21 shots he took would have tied for his 4th highest total on the season. Deron Williams' absence leaves a huge hole in the offense, and Dirk is there to fill it. He has paid 5x+ points per dollar in each of his last 2 games, and is a phenomenal play today.

Raymond FeltonRaymond Felton - FD 6000 DK 6000
Opponent - OKC
FD Proj. Pts - 27.92 DK Proj. Pts - 29.73
With Williams done and Barea not himself, it falls on Ray Felton to be the main creator on the offensive side of the ball for the Mavs. Right, that's not a joke. Still, Felton has been largely up to the task this season, and has been nothing short of great on these prices in each of the games in this series. For all of his defensive flair, Russell Westbrook is very overrated when it comes to every-possession defense. The Thunder rank the worst of any team in the playoffs when it comes to allowing fantasy points to opposing point guards. Love Felton today.

Also considered: Wes Matthews, though he's more hit or miss than the above guys.

Los Angeles Clippers at Portland Trailblazers

Analysis
Little brother got a punch in in game 3, and we blessedly got a peek at what each team intends to do if the game stays close. It's pretty much what we expected (even if it took a while for us to get here) - lots of stars, not so many scrubs, and a lot of balls in the air from Portland's dynamic back-court duo. Let's break down game 4.

Top Value Plays
Chris PaulChris Paul - FD 9800 DK 9600
Opponent - POR
FD Proj. Pts - 48.64 DK Proj. Pts - 50.72
A day in, day out play as far as our lineup optimizer is concerned. Paul finally got his full run of minutes in game 3, and paid off nearly exactly what we're projecting him for here - a well rounded 26/3/9/3 line that could have been a lot sweeter if the rest of his team could hit a shot. Paul put 21 shots in the air, and it was totally obvious that he's the guy the Clippers are going to win or lose this series behind. More to come in game 4.

Jamal CrawfordJamal Crawford - FD 4200 DK 4500
Opponent - POR
FD Proj. Pts - 22.1 DK Proj. Pts - 24.16
A bigger surprise, to me, is how much Jamal Crawford has been involved. He paid nearly 6x points per dollar on a fairly astounding 18 field goal attempts in game 3, and while some of that was on account of the Clips trailing, he had a much easier time creating shots for himself than Blake, DeAndre, or JJ. He's cheap, and the minutes are headed in the right direction. Not sure if I totally trust it.

Mason PlumleeMason Plumlee - FD 5900 DK 5600
Opponent - LAC
FD Proj. Pts - 33.15 DK Proj. Pts - 33.64
I have two regrets from this postseason, and both involve not keeping a steady hand in light of a small sample size contrary to what our projection system was seeing. One of those was Paul Millsap going into game 4 (big woops), and the other was Plumlee going into game 2. Thankfully we righted the ship fairly quickly, but man - it's been great to see Plumlee translating increased opportunity into linearly more fantasy production. He's shredded the Clips fairly lazy bigs down low, and outhustled them to 31 total rebounds in the last 2 games. These offensive boards have turned into assists and greater trust from his teammates, and he's been a real bright spot in a tough round 1 battle. It's impossible for me to envision the Trail Blazers going away from him for anything short of foul trouble, so I'm riding him once again.

Damian LillardDamian Lillard - FD 8100 DK 8300
Opponent - LAC
FD Proj. Pts - 41.94 DK Proj. Pts - 45.11
C.J. McCollumC.J. McCollum - FD 7000 DK 6500
Opponent - LAC
FD Proj. Pts - 35.76 DK Proj. Pts - 37.78
Both of these guys got off the fantasy schneid in game 3, but I'm not totally sure I trust either fully for game 4. The thing you love, of course, is the volume - they shot a combined 42 times in game 3, and the Trail Blazers won, so it stands to reason that they'll be back at it in game 4. The troubling thing for me is the bizarre assist totals. Mason Plumlee's 9 assists accounted for more than the rest of the team combined. Not promising for the Blazers in general or for the fantasy total of these two, but I'm remaining cautiously optimistic.

  1. Nice work again guys. Optimal cashed in 50/50 and tourney. Would’ve been huge if Houston showed up in the second half. Still a good night

  2. Missed our on all my double ups and 50/50 by 3-4 pts in every one. Patrick beverly.ugh. joys of dfs.

You guys think waiters has got one more in him? Having a hard time trusting that guy even with 2 decent games. Don’t have shot numbers and averages for season handy but are durants struggles playing part of his success or is the KD/waiters shot distribution about the same as its been all year?

  3. I’ve been playing dfs for close to a year now. I just signed up for this today and will be using the optimizer for the first time tomorrow. I’ve done fairly well on my own, but I’m hoping this will improve my earnings. Interested to know how it has played out for everyone using this tool….

    • Same here Michael. We will see. The trickiest part is being glued to the optimizer right before tip off because of last minute scratches. Let’s see how we do!

  4. Opti was money towards the end of the regular season. It started out rough in the playoffs but the last two days have been gold…there might have been another day that it cashed too. For the most part it’s good baseline but by no means meant to be a drag and drop?

  5. I couldnt have said it any better Zach….I actually gave up on the Opt for FD

  6. Opti has come around and doing well. At least I dont have to second guess myself. MLB is still a bit hit and miss as it will be, but I hope it comes around too.

  7. Would it be smart to start both kd and Russ? Or start just one? Thanks

    • They have such incredibly high usage rates that I wouldn’t be worried about pairing them together. They sometimes have games where they combine for 70+ points.

  8. I am kicking out the following LU in the FD Bud Light free roll just for kicks:

    Westy
    Felton
    McCollum
    Crawford
    Durant
    Anderson
    Dirk
    Ibaka
    Kanter

    • mine is a little different but goes as follows
      lillard
      paul
      waiters
      lin
      durant
      harkless
      deng
      iblacka lol ibaka
      plumlee

i think kanter usage will be through the roof tonight for some reason higher than 40%

  9. I think starting both KD and West would take a big hit on the cap and restrict you from spending money elsewhere. There is more than enough solid options to fade west tonight. SF is terrible tonight so you have to start KD at one of those spots on FD.

    • i think you almost have to deploy both….especially with the value plays that are available at the moment not a bad idea to stack them

  10. Batum out, Kaminsky in. Glad we got that early!

  11. Is the optimizer down ? Can’t get my lineups . It just keeps winding.

  12. Winslow, Williams, Kanter, CP3, Nowitzki, Plumlee, Mcollum Lillard is there anyway that Lillard McCollum can repeat what they did last game? Little concerned also that’s a double up lineup but I’m thinking about a tournament as well thoughts?

  13. That’s not very safe for 50/50 in my opinion. I would try to work in Durant and maybe Felton for safety. Kanter is risky because he’s awful on defense but he has high upside. He’s more of a gpp guy to me.

  14. Winslow, Williams, and McCollum seem like possible land mines today

  15. David Lee is confirmed out. Mejri looking pretty questionable. 33 minutes allotted to those two in the optimizer at the moment. Where do we think those minutes go tonight? Zaza and Justin Anderson would be the obvious beneficiaries. Any thoughts on how those minutes get divvied up? Do Zaza and Anderson both hit 30 minutes tonight?

    • …and what about D Powell? You’d think he sees an increase in minutes as well, no?

  16. Here is my lineup for FD 50/50s

    Russ
    Felton
    Lin
    CJ
    Durant
    Marv williams
    Dirk
    Kaminsky
    Plumlee

Im having a hard time stomaching marv williams tho, can’t decide between him and harkless. Any thoughts? Also what are you guys thoughts on wade?

    • i love williams moving to the 3 position with batum out

  17. Alex if it helps you I’m not playing Wade today so he’ll probably go off that’s usually how it goes

    • I like the price on Wlliams more than the price on Wade. That help any?

  18. Been following advice here for some time, finally paid for optimizer so first time using. But I like to play big tournaments. Anyone out there using it with tweaks for tournament? Any advice besides take a chance with a few position changes?

  19. Ok now I’m lookin like this on the day…
(Tourney) Lillard CJ Anderson Dirk Kaminsky Westbrook, Winslow Walker
Double up Westbrook Felton Anderson Williams Kaminsky Dragic Durant Plumlee
Should I feel good rolling this out?

    • Your 50/50 looks safer. Idk if I can bring myself to spend 11k for Russ on DK tonight. I’ll be looking towards CP3 and baby Dame I think for more balance to my lineups.

  20. I always feel good rollin my lineup out…..then tip-off happens

    • That’s the truth. I can’t remember the last time I got off to a big start and held it. It’s always that ‘other guy’ doing all the scoring and you left scratching your head as you pray to just sneak inside the cash line. I think this is part of the big debate over fantasy sports. You can know a handful, or core of players likely to do well and play consistently, but unless you lay out a couple hundred lineups you wont be able to cover all the bases.

  21. paul/aminu or durant/felton…..durant been an average player lately…wonder if he gonna bust out tonight

    • I think OKC wants to put Dallas out of its misery and do it in quick fashion at home. Durant got pretty chippy in the last game, so I wonder if he is going to refocus to just doing what he does best and just score, or try to intimidate rookies. I would say he gets his points though, hopefully early and often, then sits the 4th.

      • Thunder are 14.5 point favorites after all. Vegas rarely misses.

        • Don’t think it has as much to do with Vegas being right as it does the betting public being wrong

  22. You would think that Lee will do something sometime will the minutes he’s getting but does anyone truly trust him

    • Lee is just a guy with really good playoff tickets.

      • Ya pretty much. His role is hang in the corner and shoot if you find yourself checking all three of these boxes: have the ball, wide open, shot clock under 7 seconds.

    • lee me once shame on you lee me twice shame on me lol lee stopped me from cashing out big dude plays 42 minutes barely scores over 15 fantasy points i just cant anymore with lee

    • I wouldn’t touch him for 50/50’s but he’s a full go for tourneys

  23. Here is your premier Fantasy Aces lineup for tonight.

    G C.Paul 45.00 6,700.00
    G D.Lillard 39.07 5,900.00
    G K.Walker 36.49 5,750.00
    F S.Ibaka 25.47 4,650.00
    F A.Aminu 21.61 3,950.00
    F J.Anderson 12.35 3,300.00
    C M.Plumlee 25.43 4,750.00
    Util D.Wade 33.80 5,550.00
    Util R.Felton 21.44 4,350.00

Thank you and good luck tonight!

  24. Seems like a pretty easy day to do a CASH lineup. GPP is a bit harder. You can roll a CASH lineup in GPP and probably sneak in or go boom/bust at either PF/SG/SF and hope your punts pay off. Guys like Lee, Lin, Williams, Kaminsky, Waiters and co could hit value or flat out lay eggs. Plenty of people will go cheap at SG with guys like Waiters and Lee and you could get anywhere from 20fp-55fp if you run those two. Such a large gap.

I’m waiting to hear on Salah Mejri. He’s been at the middle of all the stuff with Westbrook and Durant and I’d feel much more comfortable rostering the OKC guys if I know Salah Mejri isn’t playing. It;s gotten REAL chippy and I won’t be shocked if it continues tonight in OKC.

  25. For those who play season long fantasy. Step Curry out two weeks grade one mcl strain….. could change entire playoffs..

    • Honestly, I really see the Clips advancing and knocking out the Warriors next round if Curry doesn’t play.

  26. not trusting any of the studs from OKC Walrus

    • I trust them. The math prefers to fade them at $7,600 each. 17% of your teams salary on 1 player is very intrusive to build around. It’s been my experience that the math knows better than me this year…and i’ve sided with the math (successfully) 🙂

      • I think right now you play them more than any of the previous games. Put the Mavs away while you are at home, rest for the next round, and get ready for SA. That will be the heavyweight series of 2016 I think.

        • We’ll see. I just don’t see how Pop and the Spurs think they can flip a switch and run their starters big minutes after basically having a month off. Westbrook and Durant can play close to 40 minutes and I’d bet OKC steals home court in game one. Spurs needed almost 3 quarters to put away basically a d league team in Memphis. It’s Pop and the Spurs but just doesn’t feel like it will be close.

          • True, and the Spurs won 4 out of 7 with OKC this season, which means nothing much, but I think it’s going to be the most entertaining and competitive series of this playoff season until the semi’s.

  27. Figures. Get a lineup I like then the Heat drop Whiteside is questionable for tonights game. Major suckage because if he sits and the Heat go small changes the Charlotte approach…. booooooo

  28. Thomas…. What are you hearing on Whiteside. Thats going to be one big annoying pivot for me

    • Heat listing him as questionable with a thigh injury. That’s all I know. Agreed, might be an annoying pivot if he sits.

      • I don’t see him sitting. He’s questionable with a thigh bruise. He said he “still has some swelling and pain that limits his explosion”. Sounds like nothing that would keep him out of an important game 3 in the playoffs. I’d be very surprised if he sits out. That said, the Heat are notoriously tight lipped on their injury situations and we may not get official confirmation until 6:59 EST

        • Agree, my two cents is has a roster ready with and without Whiteside. The positive is it’s the first game of the night so even if the Heat announce late should still be time to set a lineup. Plus Charlotte should have a good idea if he’s going to play and their starting roster might give us a little insight one way or the other.

          • Yep, good call. I’ll need to start working on these no-whiteside lineups.

For what it’s worth, Charlotte is Hassan’s hometown (more or less, he’s from a small town nearby). His family will be there watching. I think he plays and lights it up. Just my non-analytic, fuzzy, subjective, narrative-based opinion.

  29. With Lee out and Mejri looking iffy, what are everyone’s thoughts on D Powell getting a big boost in minutes?

    • Ryan, I don’t think I’d roster him in this slate. You may have better luck if you want a punt or sneak play for Dallas like using Anderson. The team seems to be much higher on him.

  30. J Crawford or Marvin Williams in double up?

  31. Hmm. Whiteside didnt practice. But knowing hes in his hometown, that changes things. This is def looking like a last second 6:58 type move

  32. The problem for me is this pivot is f-ckd for my lineups. It requires me to spend down at C and leaves me with like 900 extra $. But that leaves me almost no wiggle room, I basically get to swap out some SG’s and debate on Lin more.. yay eyeroll/

    • Yup, that’s where I am at. Ripple effect. if Whiteside flat out sits Wade and Deng get into the mix as well. Here’s hoping we get hard news well before tip.

  33. Ahh, off the ledge ( for now) Miami Heat just upgraded Whiteside to probable.

  34. after entering a few contests last night I was down to $1.13 left in my FD account…………………………..320.5……………………………..and now I have $21.43……………cutting it close, but old Jim is still alive

    tonight we go with

    walker
    felton
    wade
    McCollum
    Durant
    aminu
    the tank
    ibaka
    plumlee

    thoughts???????

    • I’d try to get Dirk in for Ibaka (not sure what you salary looks like on FD, im DK where the two are priced similarly). Ibaka’s ceiling is ~30-35 points. Not real great for his salary.

        • Ha, well so much for my advice. Lineup looks fine as far as i can tell.

    • For tournament play i like a Kemba/Wade stack. i’m high on McCollum, aminu, plumlee tonight as well. I also suck….

  35. Are you just doing one line up a night jim?

  36. of course that means huge nights for Lee, Matthews, Joe Johnson and other scrubs that I’ve given up on right?

  37. What do you play with the one lineup? Personally Id diversify if I were you. Hard to roll with just one lineup a night

    • I used to run several line ups but it just didn’t work……I would win with some and lose with the rest so I usually lost cash……………I play 50/50s, double ups, maybe a H2H or two, a 20 player league, a 10 player league, and a gpp for good measure

      advice???????

      • Don’t play CASH games but my understanding has always been run only 1 lineup otherwise you are just treading water.

    • No kidding. I run out a minimum of 8 per night and most times if I didn’t cash on one or two, I’d be out money. A solid core and some variety around them usually keeps you in some kind of money. These sharks that win the big money are usually rolling out 200+ lineups per night and their bankrolls allow them to enter the high dollar contests. If I had the money to enter some of those $25 plus games I would, but I just can afford the 1 and dollar GPP’s and 50/50’s.

  38. it’s usually win all or lose all however sometimes I win a few and lose a few

  39. Whose showing up in majority of optimizers

    • For center it was Plumlee. Westy, Durant, Dirk, Kaminski, CP3, Waiters MWill and Lee.

      That’s the latest I see.

  40. Wish Batum was healthy or Deng was still listed as a SF on FanDuel. SF blows tonight. Durant probably going to pay 3x-4x but the guys below him for the most part have either been awful or hit and miss.

  41. Thoughts on this lineup
    Paul
    McCollum
    Walker
    Aminu
    Williams
    Kanter
    Plumlee
    Lin
    Need a big W tonight

  42. And Mejri is warming up with the intention to play.
Outside Durant at SF Aminu has been ding a decent job. I did sneak Anderson into one GPP since I think he is going to see good minutes, and as he gets more acclimated to the game, he is only going to improve. I don’t expect the Mavs to keep this close, so I really hope they see what Anderson can do with the minutes.

  43. Mejri “warming up and will try to play”. Not sure this impacts much. I have a feeling he pulls a deron williams and has to leave the game after 5-10 minutes. I still like Justin Anderson tonight since there is no David Lee. Today incidentally was the end of my 1 month optimizer subscription so i don’t know how high the system is on Anderson. But he’s in 7/8 lineups for me and i think we see some solid minutes out of him today.

    • Never mind, no Mejri. He tried to warm up but apparently lasted like 2 minutes. Zaza and Anderson definitely both in play tonight.

  44. Wouldnt it be nice to see a bump in Kanter’s minutes

  45. Mejri is out. Ressurection of JAVALEEEE MCGEEEEEEEE!!!?!?! :p

  46. I have a great feeling that all of our players (who should feel honored that we would select them) are going to exceed all expectations………………….tonight the DFSRers are gonna rule the fantasy world!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Agree???

  47. My Cash LU:

    PG Russell Westbrook
    PG Chris Paul
SG CJ McCollum (changed from Wade)
    SG Jeremy Lin
    SF Al-Farouq Aminu
    SF Marvin Williams
    PF Dirk Nowitzki
    PF Frank Kaminsky
    C Mason Plumlee

    Pray for me…

Might throw it in a Tourney also

    • looks STRONG…………………should kick ass as long as no one falls asleep on the court or starts thinking about where they are going to go out to eat after the game.

  48. I’m feeling less thrilled about the gpps now that the usage rates are out. Durant at 70% ownership. Lin at 40%

  49. I got Whiteside at 7.3% ownership in the draftkings huge $3 gpp!!!!?

  50. Mejri trying to convince Mavs to let him play. Ugggg. I can just feel some cheap foul escalating and dudes getting tossed if he plays. Hopefully the Mavs don’t let him play.
