Pitching Targets

Note: We discussed Adam Wainwright and Francisco Liriano in the Main Article. And will be going over a few more options below.

Sonny GraySonny Gray FD 7700 DK 6100
Opponent - TB (Moore) Park - @OAK
FD - 32.88 DK - 20.71

I'm going to be very honest with you: Pitching is awful today. Every game on the slate has an O/U of at least eight, and there are no "safe" or "cash game" plays outside of, Adam Wainwright. I'm not going to lie, I got excited when I saw Stephen Strasburg was taking the mound today, but then realized he was pitching in the early only slate. That broke my heart. Guess what I'm trying to say is that the pitching options aren't pretty today (so manage your bankroll accordingly), but I also found two pitchers (other than Wainwright) that you can throw into your lineups and have a chance tonight. And the first guy on the list is, Sonny Gray.

Yes, Sonny Gray has an ERA over five, but he sports a 4.29 xFIP, which shows us that he has not been as bad as his ERA suggests. Yes, a 4.39 xFIP is something he shouldn't be proud of and bragging about to all your friends, but it sure gives fantasy owners some hope. The other thing that stood out to me is his ground ball percentage. He owns a 54.4 GB%, which will help him out quite a bit going up against this powerful Rays' lineup. The majority of these guys hit for power, which is where that GB% will come into play.

So why exactly I'm I picking on the Rays' team that left Coors Field red-hot, and will now be playing in Oakland against a pitcher that has struggled? Well I have two more reasons why I am doing so -- actually three:

`1. The slate is awful, so why not?

2. The Rays own a 24.4 K% (3rd in MLB) against right-handed pitching, which gives Gray some upside in this matchup.

3. They will be taking a huge ballpark hit. They are leaving the best park for hitters to hit in to one of the worse in the business.

It's not the easiest of things to roster Gray into your lineups, but he is very affordable and there is no one else to roster really! I'll take my chances!

Steven WrightSteven Wright FD 9500 DK 9300
Opponent - MIN (Duffey) Park - @BOS
FD - 35.41 DK - 23.21

Steven Wright is a guy I am comfortable playing in all formats today. Yes, he will be playing in a game that has an O/U of ten runs, [but] the Red Sox are heavy favorites in this contest and Wright never seems to disappoint.

Besides the fact that Vegas is on his side, I like the matchup against the Twins. They rank 20th in the MLB in wOBA (.309) and rank 10th in K% (21.9) against right-handed pitchers. Wright's peripherals won't blow you away, but let's just say his 47.0 GB% and 27.2% hard contact rate are very impressive and should help him out in this matchup and ballpark tonight. I love a Wainwirght/Wright duo for cash games tonight on two pitcher sites.

  1. Call me crazy but Koehler is my go tonight. Shows sparks of being decent-good with a top matchup. Was able to get whatever batting I wanted. A lot of uprise for the price

  2. What are your top bat picks? I think Koehler is a great pick.
