Passing Touchdowns

Look, we all know Peyton Manning and Andrew Luck should be somewhere in your top three. They are simply too good and throw too much to ignore. I’m going to give you two other guys to consider.

Jay Cutler
If you listened to our podcast this week you know that we are pretty high on Cutler’s upside this Sunday. There’s reason to suspect that, with all of his weapons relatively healthy, he’s a dude who could post huge numbers. One reason to love his chances at a multi-TD affair is what the Bears do in the red zone. They throw at the highest percentage clip in the NFL when in the red zone. The story changes slightly (although not much) when they get down within the five yard line. Even that close the Bears are throwing about 64% of the time. This ranks near the top of the league and that kind of opportunity just means Cutler stands a good chance of chucking the passes you need to hit the highest TD mark.

Phillips Rivers
If you want to talk about teams committed to the pass as they get closer to the end zone then the Chargers are a step above anyone else. the Chargers have run 12 plays inside the five yard line this season. They’ve thrown 10 of those plays for a whopping 88% passing rate in close. That’s insane. And of course the sample size is small and that’s a number that will normalize a bit as they (hopefully) get down and close. But even inside the ten where they’ve run 41 plays, they’ve thrown 63% of the time. It’s a team that doesn’t trust their running game and Rivers should benefit from this kind of play calling.

Total Yards

Demarco Murray
He’s seen less carries over the last two weeks but I feel like the situation here is just perfect for Murray. The Giants rank dead last in the league against the run and are allowing a whopping 145 yards per game on the ground. That’s a staggering number and they’ve really had no answer for opposing running backs. The last time they played Murray ran for 128 yards at a 4.6 yards per carry clip. It should be a lot of the same story again here. Where I think he has a chance to reach the stratosphere in total yards is that he’s been active in the passing game as well. He’s averaging five catches per game over the last three and there’s a solid chance he puts it all together against a weak defense in a division rival game. 160 total yards isn’t easy to pull off, but I think he has the best chance on the week to hit it.

Arian Foster
Of course he needs to play. That is the most important starting piece (expert opinion). But once we know if he’s good to go we also know the Texans are content to lean heavily on their running attack. Just look at what they did with Alfred Blue last week in giving him 36 carries. Now I wouldn’t go expecting that kind of load for Foster, and Blue’s success may precipitate a time share on their part. But unless we get word of that happening, this matchup against the Bengals could really pay dividends. Cincy ranks 28th in the league against the run and are ripe for the picking. With Mallet handling the quarterback duties it seems the Texans are even more inclined to run.

Receptions

Rob Gronkowski
He’s a beast plain and simple and has been mentioned in every single one of our NFL pieces this week. Of course, we aren’t telling you anything you don’t already know. It’d be insulting to explain his value. While he isn’t the highest targeted guy in the NFL, he’s excellent at converting the targets he does get. Gronk catches 67% of his targets which is among the highest in the group that sees the most looks this season. So you can live with him not seeing the mid double digit looks some receivers get because he gets those mitts on the ball and doesn’t let go.

Cecil Shorts
Going a little off the board with one of the other receptions slots. Shorts becomes the WR1 in Jacksonville now that Allen Robinson is shelved. With the Jags most likely playing from behind the rest of the season, Shorts stands to see looks in the passing game and hopefully even more in Jacksonville garbage time. Bortles throws a ton (he has to) and those looks have to go somewhere. Shorts was the second most targeted receiver on the team before Robinson went down. This is a simple transference of opportunity.
