John Deere Classic

TPC Deere Run - Silvis, IL
Par 71, 7,080 Yards

Last weeks Greenbrier Classic saw Danny Lee emerge victorious in a four man playoff. All four golfers got to the playoff in their own unique ways. Lee got in by making a 7 foot putt on the 17th hole. Kevin Kisner got in by going -4, bogey free on the back nine. David Hearn had a chance to win the tournament with a putt on the 18th hole but missed. He was also bogey free on the back nine. The most interesting part of the tournament was Sunday when Robert Streb tossed his putter at his bag on Hole 9 and it broke on him. By rule, he was not allowed to swap putters during the round so he finished the round putting with his sand wedge. One would think this would easily take you out of contention. Think again! Streb went on to make multiple putts including a 20 footer for birdie on Hole 13 to tie him for the lead and a short birdie putt on 18 to tie him for the lead again and send him to a playoff. It was Danny Lee's first PGA tour win and it also earned him a trip to the Open Championship next week. David Hearn, Greg Owen and James Hahn also earned their ticket to the Open at St. Andrews. This week will be the final opportunity for golfers to get in to the Open Championship. The John Deere Classic will award one qualifying place to a golfer inside the top 5 who isn't already exempt. Still a lot to play for this weekend so lets get to it.

This week the PGA Tour heads to the TPC Deere Run for the 2015 John Deere Classic. The tournament is similar to last week is that it doesn't have much top talent attending. Most players will be resting and getting ready for the Open Championship next week. The winning score is usually around the -20 mark so there will be a ton of birdies and eagles this week so I will be looking at Birdie or Better % rankings. To make birdies and eagles on this course you will need to be in position off the tee to be able to hit the green in 2 so Driving Accuracy will be important. As always I will be looking at Strokes Gained Tee to Green & Putting. Hitting the Greens in Regulation may be the most important stat for the week because if you are not hitting GIR you won't get many birdie opportunities.

This will be another week where stars and scrubs or scrubs and scrubs could very well pay off again. You could have made a winning lineup last week and left about $10K on the table. That is what happens in these in between tournaments that don't attract the top talent. It gives us in the daily fantasy world a great opportunity to create unique lineups that are needed to take down the guaranteed prize pool GPP tournaments. By looking closely at the stat rankings below, course history and current form of the field this week I will try to find the players who have good values on DraftKings, Fantasy Aces, and Victiv.

  • Strokes Gained: Tee to Green
  • Driving Distance
  • Driving Accuracy
  • Greens in Regulation
  • Birdie or Better %
  • Strokes Gained: Putting

Upper Tier Targets

Jordan Spieth
Vegas Odds - 4/1
Draftkings - $13,700
Victiv - $13,500
Fantasy Aces - $

He is coming off his second Major Championship victory this year and arguably the hottest golfer on earth. In his last five tournaments he has three top 3 finishes. He has played the TPC Deere Run three times, making the cut in each of his last two attempts with a 7th place last year and a win in 2013. He is an elite player and there is no reason he shouldn't contend again this week.

  • Strokes Gained: Tee to Green - 3
  • Driving Distance - 73
  • Driving Accuracy - 87
  • Greens in Regulation - 53
  • Birdie or Better % - 2
  • Strokes Gained: Putting - 20

Zach Johnson
Vegas Odds - 10/1
Draftkings - $11,400
Victiv - $10,000
Fantasy Aces - $

If you are looking to go more balanced this week Zach is a great start to your lineup. He is considerably less than Spieth but offers similar upside and consistency. He has made five straight cuts with four top 20's and two top 10's. In his last five start at TPC Deere Run he has recorded four top 10 finishes with a win back in 2012. Zach is an elite in Driving Accuracy, Strokes Gained: Tee to Green, and ranks highly in GIR and Birdie or Better % as well. All around, he is my favorite play of the week.

  • Strokes Gained: Tee to Green - 16
  • Driving Distance - 168
  • Driving Accuracy - 9
  • Greens in Regulation - 57
  • Birdie or Better % - 31
  • Strokes Gained: Putting - 154

Harris English
Vegas Odds - 31/1
Draftkings - $9,500
Victiv - $8,100
Fantasy Aces - $

If you are looking for a staple at the top of your cash game lineups this week English fits the bill. He has made four of his last five cuts and only missed three cuts all year. He has three top 10's and seven top 25's this year. He is a very good all around player who has plenty of distance and great with the flat stick. He has played the John Deere Classic twice and made the cut both times. He will be looking to head to St. Andrews in good form so look for another top 25 finish this weekend.

  • Strokes Gained: Tee to Green - 60
  • Driving Distance - 23
  • Driving Accuracy - 127
  • Greens in Regulation - 55
  • Birdie or Better % - 45
  • Strokes Gained: Putting - 10

Robert Streb
Vegas Odds - 34/1
Draftkings - $9,000
Victiv - $8,300
Fantasy Aces - $

Another strong Cash Game pick this week is Streb. Coming off a playoff loss at the Greenbrier after finishing the back 9 putting with a sand wedge. Pretty impressive I do say myself. He has been on a roll as of late recording four top 20's and two top 5's in his previous five tournaments. He finished 37th and 22nd in his previous two trips to TPC Deere Run. The only stat he isn't 50 in this week is driving accuracy so if he can be just above average he will have another shot to contend again this week. Hopefully with a putter for the entire tournament this time.

  • Strokes Gained: Tee to Green - 32
  • Driving Distance - 39
  • Driving Accuracy - 129
  • Greens in Regulation - 15
  • Birdie or Better % - 49
  • Strokes Gained: Putting - 33

Middle Tier Targets

Tony Finau
Vegas Odds - 34/1
Draftkings - $8,500
Victiv - $7,600
Fantasy Aces - $

I hope I am not jumping on the Finau bandwagon too late. He has been on a tear recently making seven straight cuts and finishing inside the top 25 in all of them. This will be his first trip to the John Deere Classic but his game seems to fit the course nicely. His is below average in accuracy and putting but with his confidence I feel he can get over that this week. He is ranked high in Strokes Gained: Tee to Green and GIR and elite in driving distance and Birdie or Better % which is a nice combo for shooting a low score here.

  • Strokes Gained: Tee to Green - 33
  • Driving Distance - 7
  • Driving Accuracy - 183
  • Greens in Regulation - 56
  • Birdie or Better % - 14
  • Strokes Gained: Putting - 137

Jerry Kelly
Vegas Odds - 61/1
Draftkings - $8,400
Victiv - $7,200
Fantasy Aces - $

This recommendation is more of the GPP variety as Kelly has missed his last two cuts. Before that he made five straight cuts and didn't finish outside the top 30 in that time. He comes back to TPC Deere Run having made his previous three cuts with a 3rd in 2014 and a 4th in 2013. He is very accurate off the tee and a great putter. If he can hit the greens this week look for him to record another top 20 finish and get back on track.

  • Strokes Gained: Tee to Green - 73
  • Driving Distance - 189
  • Driving Accuracy - 15
  • Greens in Regulation - 100
  • Birdie or Better % - 64
  • Strokes Gained: Putting - 44

Brendon De Jonge
Vegas Odds - 91/1
Draftkings - $7,500
Victiv - $7,200
Fantasy Aces - $

He has flip flopped making cuts the last month or so making him hard to roster in anything other than GPP's but he is coming back to a tournament where he hasn't missed a cut in the previous five years. He is above average in Strokes Gained: Tee to Green, GIR, and Birdie or Better % and elite in driving accuracy. Look for him to stop the up and down and make his second consecutive cut.

  • Strokes Gained: Tee to Green - 59
  • Driving Distance - 142
  • Driving Accuracy - 25
  • Greens in Regulation - 60
  • Birdie or Better % - 44
  • Strokes Gained: Putting - 96

Low End Targets (DK Price $7000-$7400)

Chez Reavie
Vegas Odds - 101/1
Draftkings - $7,100
Victiv - $5,100
Fantasy Aces - $

A great low end option for both cash and GPP's this week. He has made 3/3 cuts at TPC Deere Run in the past five years with two top 15 finishes and a top 5 finish. He is coming into this week finishing no worse than 25th the previous three tournaments. Reavie is ranked 4th on tour in driving accuracy and 37th in GIR. Both very important to finding success here. With his super low price of $5100 on Victiv he will be my Victiv play of the week.

  • Strokes Gained: Tee to Green - 71
  • Driving Distance - 124
  • Driving Accuracy - 4
  • Greens in Regulation - 37
  • Birdie or Better % - 111
  • Strokes Gained: Putting - 148

Chad Campbell
Vegas Odds - 101/1
Draftkings - $6,800
Victiv - $6,000
Fantasy Aces - $

Another player like Reavie who is well above average in GIR and Driving Accuracy. He has made all 8 cuts here in his career with top 15 finishes in each of his last two trips. He has also made his previous three cuts on Tour this year.

  • Strokes Gained: Tee to Green - 77
  • Driving Distance - 149
  • Driving Accuracy - 57
  • Greens in Regulation - 44
  • Birdie or Better % - 163
  • Strokes Gained: Putting - 109

J.J. Henry
Vegas Odds - 151/1
Draftkings - $6,500
Victiv - $5,200
Fantasy Aces - $

Henry is a pick that is based off of course history. In his last five trips to TPC Deere Run Henry has made all five cuts with two top 13 finishes. His form is decent having made his last two cuts. He is elite in the GIR stat so if he can get the ball on the fairway and drop a couple putts he should be able to make it to the weekend.

  • Strokes Gained: Tee to Green - 133
  • Driving Distance - 69
  • Driving Accuracy - 120
  • Greens in Regulation - 12
  • Birdie or Better % - 181
  • Strokes Gained: Putting - 155
