RBC Canadian Open

Glen Abbey Golf Club - Oakville, Ontario
Par 72, 7,273 Yards

As I write this I am sitting in a Las Vegas hotel room waiting for a late flight back to Canada. What a perfect place to be for the Open, where I normally don't get to watch much due to the time change. Well, buddy and I ended up staying up till the wee hours of the morning each day to watch. You are probably thinking "Why would you go on holidays to the desert in the middle of July?" Well I just happened to win a trip to the inaugural Fantasy Sports Combine that was held at the Wynn Hotel & Casino. I can't put into words how incredible that experience was. Got to meet ex players and coaches such as Dante Culpepper, Terrell Davis, Mike Shanahan, Brandon Stokley, Todd Heap, Brandon Jacobs, Kyle Orton and Tank Williams. For myself, as a first year fantasy writer, this was not the highlight of the trip. The fantasy combine brought in second to none group of fantasy experts. Drew Dinkmeyer, Al Zeidenfeld, Peter Jennings, Matthew Berry, John Hansen, Jonathan Bales, Liz Loza, and Brad Evans. The value in the knowledge of both season long and daily fantasy could not be found anywhere else. I cannot wait till next year.

It is now Tuesday morning and I am back in Canada finally after an entire day between airports, flight delays, and long drive home after. It is time for the preview of this weeks RBC Canadian Open. This years Canadian National Championship will take place at Glen Abbey Golf Club in Oakville, Ontario. Every year the venue for the RBC Canadian Open switches and this will be the 29th time it has been held at Glen Abbey. This weeks course history on the cheatsheet will consist of the last four Canadian Opens played at Glen Abbey. There will be more than 20 players who competed at the Open Championship at St. Andrews last week. With the tournament delayed several times and played into Monday, I am sure there will be many of the players who won't be on top of their game and fatigued from the travel. At the end of the day they are all professionals and should be able to get up for another National Championship.

Below are the 6 main stats I am using in my cheatsheet calculation this week. As the Open Championship will not be over until Monday and I have entered the stats Sunday/Monday I am using stats up to date to the John Deere Classic. Proximity was added Tuesday am so those stats are completely up to date.

This week I am including Fantasy Feud salaries as Fantasy Aces salaries were not out when writing the article.

  • Strokes Gained: Tee to Green
  • Total Driving
  • Greens in Regulation
  • Proximity
  • Par 5 Performance
  • Strokes Gained: Putting

Upper Tier Targets ($9,100 - $11,600)

Jim Furyk
Vegas Odds - 21/1
Draftkings - $10,700
Victiv - $10,300
Fantasy Feud - $173,000

A two time winner of this event with both wins coming at other Canadian Open venues. He did however come in 9th in 2013 and 14th in 2009 here. He is 9th in SG:T2G, 19th in GIR, and 1st in Proximity to the Hole. He loves playing in Canada and should put another top finish this weekend and compete for the win.

    li>Strokes Gained: Tee to Green - 8
  • Total Driving - 97
  • Greens in Regulation - 19
  • Proximity - 1
  • Par 5 Performance - 175
  • Strokes Gained: Putting - 145

Bubba Watson
Vegas Odds - 17/1
Draftkings - $11,100
Victiv - $10,500
Fantasy Feud - $170,000

Coming off a missed cut at the Open, Bubba should have had some rest on his way to the RBC Canadian Open. He is elite Tee to Green and top 30 in Total Driving. Bubba missed the cut here in 2008 and 2009 but seemed to figure the course out in 2013 with a T21 finish. He sometimes can be up and down which has me using him this week as a GPP option only.

    li>Strokes Gained: Tee to Green - 5
  • Total Driving - 28
  • Greens in Regulation - 76
  • Proximity - 140
  • Par 5 Performance - 93
  • Strokes Gained: Putting - 31

Ryan Palmer
Vegas Odds - 31/1
Draftkings - $9,500
Victiv - $7,900
Fantasy Feud - $146,000

If you are looking for a safe, consistent cash game play this week look no further than Palmer. Out of the last four Canadian Opens he has played here at Glen Abbey he has made the cut in them all with a T22 best finish in 2008. He has made 5/5 cuts recently as well with finishes between 10th and 52nd. He is 16th ranked in SG:T2G, 58th in GIR, 54th in Prox, and 39th in SG:Putting. A nice recipe for another made cut at Glen Abbey and possible top 20 finish. His best value lies on Victiv this week.

    li>Strokes Gained: Tee to Green - 16
  • Total Driving - 70
  • Greens in Regulation - 58
  • Proximity - 54
  • Par 5 Performance - 125
  • Strokes Gained: Putting - 39

Charley Hoffman
Vegas Odds - 51/1
Draftkings - $9,200
Victiv - $7,400
Fantasy Feud - $130,000

Another golfer I will be using solely in GPP tournaments this week as he is boom or bust. He has now missed two cuts in a row which should make it a great time to jump on board as his ownership should be down. Recency bias is huge in DFS and something we can take advantage of. He finished 16th at the Canadian Open in 2013 and 28th in 2008. He is top 45 ranked in SG:T2G, GIR, and Par 5 Performance. If he is on his game this week after a travelling back from Scotland look for another strong finish in Canada. He is also a nice value on Victiv at $7,400.

    li>Strokes Gained: Tee to Green - 37
  • Total Driving - 65
  • Greens in Regulation - 45
  • Proximity - 134
  • Par 5 Performance - 35
  • Strokes Gained: Putting - 146

Middle Tier Targets ($7,000 - $9,000)

Graham Delaet
Vegas Odds - 31/1
Draftkings - $9,000
Victiv - $6,800
Fantasy Feud - $152,000

Delaet comes into his native Open Championship with better odds than some of the guys in the upper tier this week. He did, oddly enough, miss the cut here 2013 and had a 46th place finish in 2009. He has made the cut in each of his previous five tournaments with a high of a 4th place finish in that time. He is top 60 ranked in SG:T2G, Total Driving, GIR, and Proximity. He is due for a win on the PGA Tour and why not in his home country. He comes in at a valued salary on Victiv of $6,800.

    li>Strokes Gained: Tee to Green - 55
  • Total Driving - 7
  • Greens in Regulation - 29
  • Proximity - 34
  • Par 5 Performance - 61
  • Strokes Gained: Putting - 122

Hunter Mahan
Vegas Odds - 41/1
Draftkings - $8,800
Victiv - $7,500
Fantasy Feud - $137,000

In 2013, Mahan had a big lead after two days here at Glen Abbey before his wife went into labor and he had to withdraw. He also had a 4th place finish here in 2004. His current form has been off lately with no finish better than 39th in his previous five tournaments. His ownership might be lower this week which would make it a nice to time to get him in your GPP tournaments. I think he will want to finish it off this time around after gifting Snedeker with the win in 2013.

    li>Strokes Gained: Tee to Green - 132
  • Total Driving - 68
  • Greens in Regulation - 83
  • Proximity - 199
  • Par 5 Performance - 96
  • Strokes Gained: Putting - 26

Jerry Kelly
Vegas Odds - 51/1
Draftkings - $7,900
Victiv - $6,100
Fantasy Feud - $123,000

Coming off a 17th place finish at the John Deere Classic, Kelly is playing with some confidence. He also has a 10th place finish in the previous five tournaments. He last played here at Glen Abbey in 2009(5th) and 2008(37th). He can be used in GPP or Cash Games this week.

    li>Strokes Gained: Tee to Green - 77
  • Total Driving - 105
  • Greens in Regulation - 91
  • Proximity - 91
  • Par 5 Performance - 100
  • Strokes Gained: Putting - 28

William McGirt
Vegas Odds - 81/1
Draftkings - $7,600
Victiv - $5,700
Fantasy Feud - $95,000

He played the Canadian Open the last time it was played at Glen Abbey back in 2013 and came in 2nd place behind Snedeker. He is top 50 ranked in SG:T2G, Proximity, and Par 5 Performance. He will be one of the safer choices for Cash Games in a field with not so many safe options and he comes with a value price tag.

    li>Strokes Gained: Tee to Green - 42
  • Total Driving - 82
  • Greens in Regulation - 64
  • Proximity - 43
  • Par 5 Performance - 19
  • Strokes Gained: Putting - 100

Low End Targets ($5,800 - $7,000)

Greg Owen
Vegas Odds - 67/1
Draftkings - $7,000
Victiv - $5,800
Fantasy Feud - $95,000

He finished T12 last time he played Glen Abbey for the Canadian Open. He comes into this week having made four of his previous five cuts with three top 20 finishes and two top 10 finishes. He should be a safe play for cash with upside for GPP's as well.

    li>Strokes Gained: Tee to Green - 64
  • Total Driving - 116
  • Greens in Regulation - 24
  • Proximity - 30
  • Par 5 Performance - 176
  • Strokes Gained: Putting - 188

Nicholas Thompson
Vegas Odds - 201/1
Draftkings - $6,800
Victiv - $4,900
Fantasy Feud - $30,000

He is a punt play on both Victiv and Fantasy Feud this week. He made the cut here at Glen Abbey in 2013(28th), 2009(53rd), 2008(5th). He is top 40 ranked in Total Driving, GIR, and Proximity. His current form isn't the best but he is coming to a course where he has been consistently good.

    li>Strokes Gained: Tee to Green - 144
  • Total Driving - 39
  • Greens in Regulation - 39
  • Proximity - 15
  • Par 5 Performance - 140
  • Strokes Gained: Putting - 163
