Wyndham Championship

Sedgefield Country Club - Greensboro, NC
Par 71, 7,071 Yards

The season's final major ended on a high note with Jason Day capturing his first career major championship. He looked poised and locked in from tee off through to the 18th hole tap in putt for the win. Jordan Spieth was the runner up and became only the third player(Tiger Woods & Jack Nicklaus) to place top 4 in all majors in one season. That wasn't the only milestone Jordan reached on Sunday. He passed Rory McIlroy to become the #1 player in the world. It has been an exciting year for major championship golf leaving us with the Fedex Cup Playoffs to close out the 2015 PGA Tour season. A four tournament race to the finish for the Fedex Cup trophy and 10 Million Dollar prize. Before we get to the playoffs we have one final tournament for players outside the top 125 to earn a spot in the playoff field.

The PGA Tour heads to Greensboro, North Carolina this week for the Wyndham Championship at Sedgefield Country Club. It is the final tournament before the Fedex Cup Playoffs begin at the Barclays. Those players outside the top 125 will have one last chance to lock up there spot. Most notably trying to get in will be Tiger Woods. He sits in 187th in the standings at almost 300 points behind 125th place. He will need at least a 2nd a place finish to have a shot. Back to the course. It isn't long but tee shots will have to be placed in the right spots to be able to hit the greens and more importantly put it close to have a birdie chance. The greens are undulating and smaller than average so not only will greens in regulation be important but proximity will be a must. With the greens being undulating and tougher than normal I will be looking for not only Strokes Gained Putting but also 3 Putt Avoidance. All the stats I am using this week are listed below:

  • Strokes Gained: Tee to Green
  • Driving Accuracy
  • Greens in Regulation
  • Proximity
  • Par 4 Performance
  • Birdie Average
  • 3 Putt Avoidance
  • Strokes Gained: Putting

Upper Tier Targets

Hideki Matsuyama
Vegas Odds - 16/1
Draftkings - $10,900
Victiv - $9,400
Fantasy Feud - $175,000

He is coming off back to back 37th place finishes which is his worst two tournament stretch all year. That is a bad stretch almost any other golfer would take at this point. He has played here twice in the last five years missing the cut last year and finishing 15th in 2013. He is elite in all stat categories except putting so if he can hit it close consistently and make a few putts over the four days he should be contending for the win come Sunday.

  • Strokes Gained: Tee to Green - 5
  • Driving Accuracy - 49
  • Greens in Regulation - 23
  • Proximity - 43
  • Par 4 Performance - 4
  • Birdie Average - 21
  • 3 Putt Avoidance - 108
  • Strokes Gained: Putting - 102

Brooks Koepka
Vegas Odds - 16/1
Draftkings - $10,800
Victiv - $9,500
Fantasy Feud - $180,000

If you are looking for consistency this week Brooks is your man. He hasn't missed a cut since the PLAYERS Championship in May and in that time has only finished outside the top 20 once. He finished off his excellent Major Championship run this year(Masters-T33,US Open-T18,Open Champ-T10,PGA Champ-T5) with a tie for fifth and should be looking to carry that momentum over into the race for the Fedex Cup. He is elite in SG:T2G, GIR, Par 4 Performance, Birdie Average, and SG:Putting. Look for Brooks to be in the final group come Sunday.

  • Strokes Gained: Tee to Green - 29
  • Driving Accuracy - 154
  • Greens in Regulation - 21
  • Proximity - 89
  • Par 4 Performance - 8
  • Birdie Average - 13
  • 3 Putt Avoidance - 87
  • Strokes Gained: Putting - 3

Bill Haas
Vegas Odds - 28/1
Draftkings - $9,600
Victiv - $8,400
Fantasy Feud - $134,000

He has made 75% of cuts this year with a win and four top 10's mixed in. If you are looking for a golfer with good course history, Haas has performed very well here. He has made 4 of his last 5 cuts here with two top 10's and a top 20 finish. As the playoffs approach Haas will be looking to get back into peak form and make a run at the title.

  • Strokes Gained: Tee to Green - 28
  • Driving Accuracy - 86
  • Greens in Regulation - 51
  • Proximity - 144
  • Par 4 Performance - 59
  • Birdie Average - 124
  • 3 Putt Avoidance - 114
  • Strokes Gained: Putting - 148

Webb Simpson
Vegas Odds - 28/1
Draftkings - $9,500
Victiv - $8,000
Fantasy Feud - $151,000

The #1 golfer in the field when looking at course history over the previous five years. In that time Webb has recorded a win, three top 10's, and a 22nd place finish. His game seems to fit this course nicely as he is elite in SG:T2G, Driving Accuracy, Proximity, and Birdie Average. He has made 4 of his last 5 cuts but without a top 20 finish. Coming back to a course he is comfortable with should be a nice boost for Webb this week.

  • Strokes Gained: Tee to Green - 7
  • Driving Accuracy - 30
  • Greens in Regulation - 68
  • Proximity - 59
  • Par 4 Performance - 112
  • Birdie Average - 53
  • 3 Putt Avoidance - 170
  • Strokes Gained: Putting - 169

Middle Tier Targets

Harris English
Vegas Odds - 50/1
Draftkings - $8,600
Victiv - $7,000
Fantasy Feud - $123,000

The upside is limited with English but the consistency is definitely there. He hasn't missed a cut since the PLAYERS back in May and makes a great start to a cash game lineup. He played here back in 2012 and picked up a 10th place finish. He is elite when looking at Par 4 Performance, Birdie Average, 3 Putt Avoidance and SG:Putting. Look for another made cut and possible top 20 finish this weekend from Harris.

  • Strokes Gained: Tee to Green - 75
  • Driving Accuracy - 120
  • Greens in Regulation - 63
  • Proximity - 73
  • Par 4 Performance - 42
  • Birdie Average - 53
  • 3 Putt Avoidance - 40
  • Strokes Gained: Putting - 23

Will Wilcox
Vegas Odds - 50/1
Draftkings - $8,400
Victiv - $6,600
Fantasy Feud - $123,000

When looking at the stats from my cheatsheet this week Wilcox leads the way with a 33.5 average rank. He is elite in 7 of the 8 stats with 3 putt avoidance being his weakness. Given that he is 4th in GIR and 23rd in Proximity he shouldn't be in many situations to 3 putt anyway. He played here last year and finished in 24th. His current form coming in is pretty good as well with four straight finishes inside the top 21 with two top 10's in that time.

  • Strokes Gained: Tee to Green - 20
  • Driving Accuracy - 14
  • Greens in Regulation - 4
  • Proximity - 23
  • Par 4 Performance - 5
  • Birdie Average - 30
  • 3 Putt Avoidance - 132
  • Strokes Gained: Putting - 40

Russell Knox
Vegas Odds - 66/1
Draftkings - $8,100
Victiv - $6,900
Fantasy Feud - $109,000

He has been up and down lately but has the game to fit this course. He is 25 in SG:T2G, 26th in Driving Accuracy, 7th in GIR, 5th in Proximity, and 8th in Par 4 Performance. His weakness is the flat stick so if he can limit the length of putts he will have to make he should come away with a nice finish this week.

  • Strokes Gained: Tee to Green - 25
  • Driving Accuracy - 26
  • Greens in Regulation - 7
  • Proximity - 5
  • Par 4 Performance - 8
  • Birdie Average - 75
  • 3 Putt Avoidance - 62
  • Strokes Gained: Putting - 129

David Toms
Vegas Odds - 100/1
Draftkings - $7,600
Victiv - $5,700
Fantasy Feud - $36,000

His price on DraftKings is a little higher than I would like but Fantasy Feud is pretty much giving him away this week. He has three finishes inside the top 20 in his previous five tournaments and when looking at course history he is one of the best here over the last five years. He has four finishes inside the top 20 with a top 10 in that time. He is very accurate off the tee and is 21st in proximity. He scores well on the par 4's and is very good at 3 putt avoidance. He probably won't contend for a win again in his career but should be a good bet for a made cut and possible top 20 finish. A great addition to your Fantasy Feud GPP lineups this week.

  • Strokes Gained: Tee to Green - 92
  • Driving Accuracy - 2
  • Greens in Regulation - 149
  • Proximity - 21
  • Par 4 Performance - 49
  • Birdie Average - 180
  • 3 Putt Avoidance - 29
  • Strokes Gained: Putting - 143

Low End Targets

Colt Knost
Vegas Odds - 150/1
Draftkings - $6,900
Victiv - $5,600
Fantasy Feud - $39,000

He is top 50 ranked in 7 of the 8 stats on my cheatsheet this week and most importantly his top stats are Driving Accuracy, Proximity and 3 Putt Avoidance. He has made four of his last five cuts and finished 37th the last time he played this tournament in 2013. The upside is limited but he is a nice cost savings if you are trying to get some more expensive guys in your lineups.

  • Strokes Gained: Tee to Green - 113
  • Driving Accuracy - 6
  • Greens in Regulation - 48
  • Proximity - 8
  • Par 4 Performance - 35
  • Birdie Average - 56
  • 3 Putt Avoidance - 7
  • Strokes Gained: Putting - 41

Vaughn Taylor
Vegas Odds - 150/1
Draftkings - $6,700
Victiv - $5,000
Fantasy Feud - $39,000

Coming in under $7,000 this week, Taylor will be my value play of the week. He has played in 11 PGA Tour tournaments this year and only missed one cut with two top 10 and six top 25 finishes. He is ranked 8th in SG:T2G, 4th in Birdie Average, and he is 1st in Proximity. His biggest value comes on Victiv and Fantasy Feud but I wouldn't hesitate to use him any site.

Strokes Gained: Tee to Green - 8
  • Driving Accuracy - 28
  • Greens in Regulation - 25
  • Proximity - 1
  • Par 4 Performance - 35
  • Birdie Average - 4
  • 3 Putt Avoidance - 111
  • Strokes Gained: Putting - 79
