In our daily picks article you saw us throw out Matt Harvey, Jake Arrieta and Gio Gonzalez as some of the top value on the slate. Here we’re going to take a deeper dive into some pitchers who just missed the list, you can target in tournaments on the cheap or some guys to possibly avoid.

Tournament Targets

Jeff SamardzijaJeff Samardzija FD 9000 DK 10000
Opponent - SD (Cashner) Park - @SF
FD - 40.59 DK - 22.08 All day slate
The Shark is someone we didn't include in the main picks because he's part of the all-day slate. He's in a very similar situation to Johnny Cueto last night (look how that one turned out) and could make for an upside play. He's facing a Padres team that simply cannot hit righty pitching. They rank dead last in team wOBA by a considerable margin this season and there isn't a lot of light at the end of the tunnel. They feature a righty-heavy lineup who don't have great reverse splits. Samardzija doesn't strike out tons of batters which makes him just a little iffy to me, but he's a -185 favorite going in a great pitcher's park. If you're playing the early slate then he's worth a look.

Matt MooreMatt Moore FD 7600 DK 8300
Opponent - BAL (Tillman) Park - @TB
FD - 33.73 DK - 18.39
We through him in as a dude to consider on this slate, but let's take a closer look at why. This game projects as very low scoring against the Orioles with only a 7 run o/u. He's a slight favorite at -127 and has started the season much like many expected of him when he first came up. The big thing with Moore so far is he's greatly reduced the walk rate. He could always strike out batters, but would get crushed with control. In the early season he's rocking a 5:1 K:BB rate and just pounding the fastball. Right now he's looking like a strong candidate for the second SP position on DraftKings and worth a look on FanDuel as well.

Collin McHughCollin McHugh FD 7600 DK 8100
Opponent - SEA (Iwakuma) Park - @SEA
FD - 30.77 DK - 15.9
Ok the bad news first. His ERA is atrocious at 7.56. The good news is the xFIP is about three runs less than that. Though the bad news is that xFIP still isn't good. McHugh's run into some tough opponents to start the year in Boston, Detroit and Kansas City. Today he'll face a middle of the pack Mariners squad in a great pitcher's park. The peripherals are still in line with his projections and I don't suspect he continues the struggles like this meaning we are getting him somewhat on the cheap.

Scott KazmirScott Kazmir FD 7900 DK 6700
Opponent - MIA (Nicolino) Park - @LAD
FD - 31.07 DK - 15.97
Really only a DraftKings consideration for me, but worth a look there because he's so cheap as a second SP option. That's enticing when looking at a tag like Arrieta's. Kazmir K's a little less than eight batters per nine and and his xFIP is more than two runs less than the ERA. Still facing a tough Marlins' squad that hits lefties very well, but the ballpark does Kazmir some favors here.

  1. Montero and Granderson are out but every lineup I try for has them in it. What’s with that ?

  2. It was a little late as the early game already started.

  3. Also for a sneaky gpp pitcher, roll out Scott Kazmir.

    • He’s gonna be seriously underowned and a BvP special.

  4. is the weather good for the Nationals game tonight? Looks like light rain but it may hold off til the game is over too
