A quick heads up - we post an updates article every day in the early afternoon, EST, to catch everyone up on how things are changing as a result of whatever news has come through. We also have great talks in the comments of that article. Hope to see you there!
Stacking in DFS MLB is such an important concept if you’re looking to take down a big tournament on FanDuel or DraftKings. It’s also a good way to diversify cash games because the variance in baseball can mean wild swings (ahem) in the scoring on a particular slate. The concept is easy. You want to pile players from one or two teams into your lineups because those guys compound scores by helping each other score runs when the going is good.

Stack Targets

Note - The Rockies and Diamondbacks are in Coors Field and are the top 2 stacks on the board. Let's look at some stacks that will go a lot less owned.

New York Yankees vs. Kris Medlen (Royals)
Park - Yankees Stadium

Very similar story in this one as yesterday, as we have some strong left-handed hitters playing in a hitter friendly ballpark against a right-handed pitcher who gets hit hard against lefties. Kris Medlen has been nothing to brag about this year, sporting an ERA close to 7 and has walked nearly as many hitters as he's struck out. Diving a little deeper into the numbers, Medlen has an xFIP of 5.28 and a BABIP of .324 (which is great since he doesn't strike a lot of guys out). Moving into the splits, Medlen has struggled quite a bit against left-handed hitters, which is something the Yankees are not in short supply of. Medlen has an xFIP of 5.89, a BB/9 of 6.17 (yes you're reading that correctly), and a FB% of nearly 45% against lefties this season. All of these numbers bode well for guys like Teixeira, McCann, Gardner, and Beltran who hit righties pretty well from the left-side of the plate. Stacking the Yankees here also won't break the bank as most of these guys are coming in a relatively low prices, so you can still spend up on some bats in Coors depending on who you grab as your pitcher.

Boston Red Sox vs. Sean Manaea (Athletics)
Park - Fenway Park

I think this is a stack that a lot of people will overlook tonight, because the Red Sox aren't really known as a team with a lot of power right-handed batters. With that being said, they are going to have a great opportunity tonight against Sean Manaea who has been about as bad as it gets against righties this season. Consider the following numbers against righties so far this season: xFIP of 6.46, wOBA of .429, OPS of .995, and a softly-hit ball % of only 12.5%. In other words, when righties step to the dish, Manaea is in big trouble. For this particular stack I'd be sure to get Pedroia, Bogaerts, and Betts for sure, and then if you absolutely need a 4th I'd consider Bradley Jr. (even though he's a lefty he has a reverse split and has hit over .300 against southpaws over the past two seasons). The O/U in this one is 9, which is pretty high for any game not played at Coors, and mix in the fact that Manaea has never pitched on the road this season and there could be some big numbers put up by the Sox tonight.

Toronto Blue Jays vs. Matt Cain (Giants)
Park - AT&T Park

This is a very much against the grain stack due to the reputation of AT&T Park being a pitchers safe haven, but I think we can make a special exception for the Blue Jays against Matt Cain. Cain is a guy who has been getting absolutely crushed this year from both sides of the plate (OPS of .899 against lefties, OPS of 1.014 against righties), and has already given up 6 home runs this season (3 of which were at home). Diving a bit deeper into some of the advanced numbers, Cain has actually been worse against righties this season, sporting an xFIP of 6.01 and a softly-hit ball% of just 14.8%. This means that guys are making some solid contact against Cain, and for a team that has lots of right-handed power like the Blue Jays, that could mean runs in a hurry. I'm looking at the usual suspects like Donaldson, Bautista, and Encarnacion to do some major damage tonight against Cain, but I also like Saunders because he should be hitting at the top of the order in front of all of these big bats. I think the ballpark will scare a bunch of people away from this stack but it wouldn't surprise me if Toronto puts up some big numbers tonight.

Some other GPP stacks to consider - Strongly consider stacking the Pirates against the Reds if the weather conditions improve.

  1. is it better to enter a $300 contest or a $25 contest?

    • If you have to ask then you probably should not enter a $300 contest.

  2. Hard time picking stacks today. Weather conditions/air densities are really pitcher friendly today, or risking a delay/PPD. What are good cheap options, some people that can make the COL/ARI stacks work.
