Hello my fellow hockey fans and welcome to a nice little cozy four game slate in the NHL. Today we have a couple of weak defenses facing of against each other and one red hot goalie that is hard to ignore. Let's dive right in folks.

Braden Holtby FD - $9300 DK - $8400
Opponent - EDM
Proj Pts FD - 14.5 DK - 3.63

Are the Capitals good or what? Today they get to play against the Oilers who are playing their third road game in four nights, so they will be exhausted. Holtby gave up only one goal in a victory over the Flyers in his last start and is 15-1-0 in his last 16 starts. That's  just plain awesome. The Capitals are awesome at everything they do, so look for a win from holtby tonight and he has as much shutout upside as any goalie in the league on any given day. The Caps also play tomorrow, so if Philipp Grubauer gets the start this evening, he is also a great play, so roll him out there and enjoy the discounted prices.

CENTERS

Nicklas Backstrom FD - $6700 DK - $7200
Opponent - EDM
Proj Pts FD - 12.44 DK - 4.17

This Swedish star has been playing some of the best hockey of his career lately and he got a goal and an assist last game. He now has 63 points this season, which is tied for fourth in the NHL. Backstrom has three goals, six assists and 13 shots on goal  in his last five games.  Like I said earlier, the Oilers will be tired and Backstrom gives you some nice exposure to Ovechkin on the first line and #1 power-play unit in Washington. He is a good play in all formats today.

Stack With: Alex Ovechkin, T.J. Oshie

 

 

Mikael Backlund FD - $5200 DK - $5300
Opponent - FLA
Proj Pts FD - 11.84 DK - 3.75

Center is a fairly tough position today, but Backlund caught my eye from a value perspective. He plays on the Flames' #2 line and #2 power-play unit and he has three goals and an assist in his last two games. The Panthers gave up five goals to the Oilers last game and their goalies are having issues stopping pucks lately.  Backlund is a good play in all formats this evening.

WINGERS

Jamie Benn FD - $8400 DK - $7100
Opponent - ARI
Proj Pts FD - 20.33 DK - 5.98

Wow, is this ever a juicy matchup tonight for the Dallas Stars. Benn and his team-mates must be licking their chops as they are about to face the Coyotes who gave up six goals in Chicago last night. The Coyotes are ranked 3rd worst in the league on defense and they are just plain awful at puck possession. Benn has been hot for a while now, as he has points in five of his last six games, and eleven of his last thirteen. The superstar winger scored a goal last game and has nine shots in his last two games. We need a decent amount of exposure to the Stars today, and it starts with Benn. He is my favourite play in all formats today on Draftkings and also a great play on Fanduel.

Radim Vrbata FD - $5700 DK - $5100
Opponent - DAL
Proj Pts FD - 12.86 DK - 3.94

I mentioned that the Coyotes are awful on defense and they are also pretty bad on offense. Vrbata is an exception though and he plays on the #1 line and #1 PP unit in Arizona. He is actually on an impressive seven game point streak with two goals five assists and 22 shots on goal in his last seven games. He has averaged 3.03 shot shots per game this season, which is in line with his last seven games, so he has safety written all over him. Vrbata also has decent upside tonight against the Starts and their very leaky 2nd worst Defense.

Stack with: Martin Hanzal, Max Domi

 

 

DEFENSEMEN

Aaron Ekblad FD - $5200 DK - $4500
Opponent - CGY
Proj Pts FD - 9.67 DK - 3.22

This young man shoots the puck on net a lot as he averages 3.12 shot shots per game and he has 12 shots and 3 blocks in his last three games to go along with two assists. He also sees a decent amount of time on the power-play and penalty kill units in Florida. He is a nice safe play in the mid salary range on defense today.

 

 

Dion Phaneuf FD - $4800 DK - $4400
Opponent - CAR
Proj Pts FD - 8.96 DK - 2.86

Of course, Erik Karlsson is a great play every single game, but he is expensive. Phaneuf isn't young anymore from a hockey perspectice, but he's been getting it done lately for the Senators and he logs a ton of ice time. Phaneuf has two assists, 11 shots and seven blocks in his last three games, so he also makes a  good play at the low to mid range salary level today.
