Daily Fantasy Hockey Picks for FanDuel and DraftKings 2/28/17

Welcome back for another huge Tuesday night in daily fantasy hockey. There are 12 games total tonight with eight of the Top 10 offenses in action so there won't be a lack of options. Only three teams(MTL, MIN, LAK) are playing a back to back with four others(NSH, BUF, NYR, CBJ) playing a third game in four nights. Let's jump right into the picks for tonight.

Hockey is back and with it come our NHL projections which help inform these picks every night. When you purchase a DFSR NHL subscription to our base hockey projections you also get access to our brand new NFL DFS suite of tools including full projections, optimal NFL lineups and our Player Lab, which includes filters to help you create NFL lineups for FanDuel and DraftKings for any format. It’s a set of tools well beyond anything we’ve ever had, and something we feel will help our users *ahem* tackle the NFL season.

GOALIES

Tuukka RaskTuukka Rask FD - $8900 DK - $8400
Opponent - ARI
Proj Pts FD - 19.85 DK - 4.96

Despite there being 12 games tonight, there are really a limited number of goalies you could trust in all formats. Top goalies in Carey Price and Sergei Bobrovsky are going head to head and the same goes for King Henrik and Braden Holtby. I think all four of those options make excellent GPP plays but Tuukka Rask is definitely in the best spot tonight. The Bruins are home as huge -280 favorites to the Coyotes who rank 27th offensively and sit above only the bottom feeding Avalanche in the standings. Rask has been picking up the wins lately going 6-3 in his last nine starts but has struggled with the save %(.863). I am not all worried tonight, however, as the Bruins have a near 10% advantage when looking at team Corsi which is by the far the biggest I have seen in a few weeks. Roll out Rask with confidence!

Ryan MillerRyan Miller FD - $8300 DK - $7800
Opponent - DET
Proj Pts FD - 15.46 DK - 3.86

There were definitely a few other options I feel safer about but I am a GPP player and always look to dig deep and take a risk on these big slates. Enter Ryan Miller who has never been mistaken for consistent but can definitely get you some value if you find the right time to use him. That is at home, where he has been much better this season with 10 more wins and a .922 save % vs. a .908 save % on the road. It is almost a lock he will be sub 5% owned as he has really struggled lately going 2-8 with .906 save % but does have one shutout, bringing his season total to three. He gets a plus matchup vs. the Eastern Conference bottom-feeding Red Wings who have lost six of their last 10 games and rank in the bottom five in offense. It's  a high-risk play but the reward could be in the form of GPP glory.

CENTERS

**Note: Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Connor McDavid are all in great spots tonight at the top of the salary on both sites. I prefer Malkin at a bit oof discount but all are in play. I will dig a little deeper below and provide a few value plays.**

Patrice BergeronPatrice Bergeron FD - $7100 DK - $7100
Opponent - ARI
Proj Pts FD - 16.08 DK - 5.17

It starts with the Bruins who are huge -280 favorites and projected for over 3.5 goals tonight. Their top line will be a staple in my lineups tonight as they have been on fire over the last few weeks and it starts with one of the best two-way players in the league. Over his last 12 games, Bergeron has tallied 17 points while also providing a very high floor with a whopping 49 shot on goal. Look for him and the top line to take advantage of an elite matchup vs. the 28th ranked defensive team.

Stack with: Brad Marchand, David Backes

Vincent TrocheckVincent Trocheck FD - $5700 DK - $6300
Opponent - CAR
Proj Pts FD - 12.65 DK - 3.8

The Panthers have been ice cold lately losing three straight games but there is light at the end of the tunnel. They open as -150 home favorites to the Hurricanes who have been one team who has been worse. They have lost six of their last seven games and have given up three or more goals in six of their last eight games. Not only that, but the Canes also have the worst road record in the Eastern Conference. For Trocheck, he ranks near the top of the PTS/$ value with excellent shot volume having recorded 32 in his last 10 games and averages just under three per game for the season. He is safe in all formats.

Stack with: Jussi Jokinen, Reilly Smith

Patrik BerglundPatrik Berglund FD - $4000 DK - $4500
Opponent - EDM
Proj Pts FD - 9 DK - 2.69

If it's PTS/$ value that you are after at the Center position scroll down and insert Berglund into your lineups. He has cooled off after his hot start to the month but is coming off an assist last game vs. the Blackhawks giving him seven points over his last 10 games including two on the powerplay. He gets to face the Oilers at the right time as well as they have lost three of their last four games while giving up 14 goals.

Stack with: Jaden Schwartz, David Perron

WINGERS

Jamie BennJamie Benn FD - $8500 DK - $7300
Opponent - PIT
Proj Pts FD - 16.57 DK - 5.1

The matchup isn't the best against the Penguins but the way Benn is playing he is nearly matchup-proof. His size and speed allow him to make moves and get through areas that smaller players can't and he gets rewarded it. Besides a slow October start, he has been averaging a point per game for the season with 15 points in 11 February games. He also gives us a ton of safety for cash games with shot volume. With 35 shots over his last 10 games, he now has 157 for the season and he will even sacrifice his body and block shots. Stacking him with Eakin gives you some salary relief to also pay up for Tyler Seguin who skates on the second line but joins Benn on the top powerplay unit.

Stack with: Cody Eakin, Tyler Seguin(PP)

Viktor ArvidssonViktor Arvidsson FD - $6300 DK - $6200
Opponent - BUF
Proj Pts FD - 12.77 DK - 3.68

His performance may be a bit overshadowed by his linemate Filip Forsberg but he also makes an elite play in all formats. From a PTS/$ perspective, he fits perfectly at a discount from Forsberg and actually comes with a bit more stable floor. They both rank Top 30 in shot attempts per 60 minutes but Arvidsson has managed to get more through to the net with 188 shots in 60 games(3.2 per game). I mean, you can't go wrong with either guy right but if you are playing one, take the discount with Arvidsson and build a more balanced lineup.

Stack with: Filip Forsberg, Ryan Johansen

Jake GuentzelJake Guentzel FD - $4200 DK - $4600
Opponent - DAL
Proj Pts FD - 8.82 DK - 2.65

With no picture in his profile above he seems like a mystery man but has been far from it on the ice with his play. The 22-year-old rookie has impressed in his first 23 NHL games with 14 points while skating just over 15 minutes per game. On the bright side, he has been getting the bulk of those minutes on the top line with Sidney Crosby and is also getting time with the second powerplay unit. At a low to mid $4K price tag, he is an elite value tonight as the Pens face the Stars 29th ranked defense.

Stack with: Sidney Crosby, Chris Kunitz

DEFENSEMEN
Roman JosiRoman Josi FD - $6600 DK - $6200
Opponent - BUF
Proj Pts FD - 14.77 DK - 4.63

As our daily readers already know me and Ryan don't usually recommend D-men above the $5K mark as we concentrate on value upside. I will make another exception tonight as Roman Josi is running crazy hot from a fantasy perspective. He has tallied six goals and 14 points over his last 10 games but that isn't even the best part. The has also offered an elite floor with 21 blocks and 33 shots during those 10 games with five of his points coming on the powerplay. While this elite level of production won't likely continue, take advantage of it while you still can.

Alex GoligoskiAlex Goligoski FD - $4700 DK - $3500
Opponent - BOS
Proj Pts FD - 8.68 DK - 2.74

Now onto my top value D-man of the night and no, once again, it isn't Ivan Provorov. It was very close as the Flyers get an elite matchup vs. the Avs but I decided to dig down a little deeper.  He is a little over priced on FanDuel playing for the Coyotes in a below average matchup vs. the Bruins but is in play in all formats on DraftKings in the mid $3K range. His safety does not come with shot volume but rather his shot blocking which has been on display lately. Over his last three games, he has blocked 10 shots while also getting in on the offense with an assist in each of those games.

  1. Just trying to learn your thinking. Can you explain why Ryan Miller would be a GPP goalie? This is the slowest pace game of the night, both teams average less than 28 shots for. The only way Ryan Miller would be a GPP goalie is IF he gets a shutout bonus, to make up 10 extra saves. I would think a GPP goalie would be a goalie that will get lots of shots on him (Mike Smith) and make a ton of saves and give up 1 or 2 goals AND get the win. Thanks!
