Daily Fantasy Hockey Picks for FanDuel and DraftKings 1/14/17

Welcome back hockey fans. Sunday brings us a smaller four-game slate and if you are playing on DraftKings, it will be a bit harder as they split the slates into two with no all-day slate. Four teams(DET, NYR, PIT, MIN) are playing on back to back days with Carolina and Calgary also playing a third game in four nights.

Hockey is back and with it come our NHL projections which help inform these picks every night. When you purchase a DFSR NHL subscription to our base hockey projections you also get access to our brand new NFL DFS suite of tools including full projections, optimal NFL lineups and our Player Lab, which includes filters to help you create NFL lineups for FanDuel and DraftKings for any format. It’s a set of tools well beyond anything we’ve ever had, and something we feel will help our users *ahem* tackle the NFL season.

GOALIE

Mike SmithMike Smith FD - $8300 DK - $8300
Opponent - CAR
Proj Pts FD - 15.18 DK - 3.8

Even with limited options, we have a couple ways to go on the early slate today when looking at the goalie position. Jeff Glass is coming off a fantastic start for the Blackhawks and makes a nice value GPP play. For me, I will be turning to the Flames Mike Smith if he is back between the pipes today. Not only has won five straight starts with a .934 save % but he has also been money on the road this season with an 8-3-3 record and an incredible .946 save % with a shutout. Today he faces a Carolina team that has dropped five of their last seven games and rank 21st overall in offense. Fire up Smith in all formats.

Alex StalockAlex Stalock FD - $7500 DK - $8200
Opponent - VAN
Proj Pts FD - 19.31 DK - 4.83

Things are a little more muddled on the main/night slate. With the Wild playing on back to back nights it will likely be backup Alex Stalock between the pipes and while he hasn't been great this season, he has a couple things going for him tonight. First of all, he has been much better on home ice with a 4-2-1 record to go along with a .927 save % and one shutout. The other part of the equation is that he is playing a Canucks team that has dropped eight of their last 10 games and rank 26th offensively. Today has a GPP-only kind of feel if you are playing the two games slates and Stalock is a nice risk reward option.

CENTERS

Jonathan ToewsJonathan Toews FD - $7000 DK - $6600
Opponent - DET
Proj Pts FD - 12.04 DK - 3.5

We are pretty limited on the early slate and I lean Toews over Monahan at the top for a few reasons starting with the floor for cash games. Both players have provided upside lately(Toews nine points, Monahan 12 over their past 10 games) but Toews has been the safer option as he has also tallied 36 shots on goal to go with four multi-point efforts in his last seven games. I have no problem using either in GPP formats but for cash the choice is simple for me today.

Stack with: Brandon Saad, Vince Hinostroza

Evgeni MalkinEvgeni Malkin FD - $8500 DK - $7300
Opponent - NYR
Proj Pts FD - 15.27 DK - 4.52

On the all-day or late slate, I don't think there is any way to get away from Evgeni Malkin no matter the format you are playing. He is cheaper than Crosby on both sites and while they both have big upside, Malkin has outperformed Sid lately with 12 points over his last 10 games(Crosby-10) and added a very high floor with 35 shots on goal(Crosby-16). Malkin has also ripped up the Rangers this season with a goal and four assists in two games played.

Stack with: Patric Hornqvist, Carl Hagelin, Phil Kessel(PP), Sidney Crosby(PP)

WINGERS

Johnny GaudreauJohnny Gaudreau FD - $8000 DK - $7700
Opponent - CAR
Proj Pts FD - 14.56 DK - 4.21

The Flames are on a heat streak at the moment as they have won six straight games to get back into third in the Pacific Division. Leading the way offensively has been Johnny Hockey who doesn't seem to be affected by fatigue whatsoever as the team is coming off a three games in four nights stretch. He has tallied at least one point in six straight games with four multi-point efforts and now sits in a tie for second overall with 52 total points this season. They will be on the road today but get a plus matchup vs. the Hurricanes who have dropped five of their last seven games and rank 21st defensively. Fire up Gaudreau in all formats.

Stack with: Sean Monahan, Michael Ferland

Anthony DuclairAnthony Duclair FD - $3100 DK - $3900
Opponent - DET
Proj Pts FD - 8.24 DK - 2.38

Duclair skated on the third line in his first game with Blackhawks and only tallied one shot but picked am assist in just under 12 minutes of ice-time. He also skated over two minutes on the top powerplay unit with Patrick Kane and I would not be surprised to see him jump up to a top-six role on Sunday. He has disappointed since his rookie season where he tallied 44 points but a new situation should help the talented winger get back to form. At these prices, he is in play in all formats today.

PP Stack with: Nick Schmaltz, Patrick Kane

Brock BoeserBrock Boeser FD - $6500 DK - $6400
Opponent - MIN
Proj Pts FD - 13.94 DK - 4.05

If you are playing the late slate only today, especially on DraftKings, Brock Boeser makes an interesting play for GPP formats. He is having a tremendous first full season with the Canucks despite the team ranking 27th overall offensively with 40 points in his first 41 games. He is also providing a decent floor averaging 2.8 shots per game and has seen an uptick late with 33 over his last 10 games.

Stack with: Sam Gagner, Thomas Vanek

DEFENSEMEN

Jordan OesterleJordan Oesterle FD - $4100 DK - $5000
Opponent - DET
Proj Pts FD - 9.1 DK - 2.61

Like all the positions, we have very limited options but one I will be using in all formats today is Jordan Oesterle. He has gone pointless in two straight games but before that had tallied points in five of six games. Most importantly, he is getting a ton of opportunities as he is now skating on the top unit with Duncan Keith as well as the top powerplay unit.

Alexander EdlerAlexander Edler FD - $4900 DK - $5400
Opponent - MIN
Proj Pts FD - 11.23 DK - 3.65

Edler doesn't provide us very much upside with just 12 points on the season but has been killing it from a safety standpoint lately. Over his last 10 games, he has an elite balance of shots(35) and blocks(33) for an average of 4.3 DraftKings/14.5 FanDuel points per game. Fire up Edler in all formats tonight.

Also Consider: Mark Giordano(CGY) & Jared Spurgeon(MIN)
