Total Bases

Ryan Braun
He'll be a nearly universal play in SOME total bases slot today, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't play him, too. Braun has posted an otherworldly 177 wRC+ against left handed pitching for his career, and Wade Miley is absolutely prone to giving up the long ball. The system thinks Braun is the best play at total bases, and frankly, it isn't even close.

Buster Posey
This pick will be slightly off board today, as people will tend to go in the direction of more conventional sluggers, but hear me out. Posey has a nearly 1.000 OPS against left handed pitchers for his career, and in this contest he's facing one that is terrible (Danks) in a great hitter's ball park. I wouldn't play him in the top slot, but for 2 total bases? I could absolutely see Posey rapping out a couple of hits or collecting a double. More is definitely possible - but Posey is really a great play for hits or TBs in my opinion.

Hits

Jacoby Ellsbury
The system loves Ellsbury to get lots of at bats against Stroman - and his ability to make contact will give him a lot of opportunity to work out some base hits. Love him in the top hits slot today, and I don't think I'd even consider anyone else.

Starlin Castro
As I wrote in our other daily picks column today, Castro is having his finest offensive season as a major leaguer - and we get a bonus - the guy doesn't really strike out or walk much - a combined rate of just 22%. Desclafani is a control pitcher who should be working around the plate, giving the Cubs shortstop a great opportunity to pile on the hits.

Strikeouts

Yu Darvish
Not exactly a controversial pick. Darvish has K'd double digit batters in 4 of his last 6 games, and faces a potent but K-heavy Oakland lineup. Our system projects him for almost 9 Ks, which is almost unheard of. The next guy below him is a full 1.5 Ks behind. And that guy is...

Max Scherzer
I was sort of surprised to see this projection, to be honest. The Royals are notoriously difficult to strike out. But Scherzer is just that awesome at striking people out, apparently, and while there are a lot of decent strike out pitchers going tonight, Scherzer has crossed the 7 K threshold in each of his last 3 outings, and has struck out more than a guy per inning on the season.
