Daily Fantasy Hockey Picks for FanDuel and DraftKings 2/17/17

Hello hockey fans and welcome to a nice cozy little three-game NHL slate. NBA is currently on their All-Star break, so hockey will be a very popular sport in the DFS world this weekend. Today we have two teams playing their third game in four nights, as well as in back to back games. (COL, PIT) We have some great picks lined up for you today, so let's get to it. Shall we?

Hockey is back and with it come our NHL projections which help inform these picks every night. When you purchase a DFSR NHL subscription to our base hockey projections you also get access to our brand new NFL DFS suite of tools including full projections, optimal NFL lineups and our Player Lab, which includes filters to help you create NFL lineups for FanDuel and DraftKings for any format. It’s a set of tools well beyond anything we’ve ever had, and something we feel will help our users *ahem* tackle the NFL season.

GOALIES

Cam Ward FD - $8000 DK - $8200
Opponent - COL
Proj Pts FD - 18.77 DK - 4.69

Okay, so just to let you know, Cam Ward is not a great goalie and barely even a good one. He has won a Stanley Cup, so he has earned himself a place in the NHL until he decides to quit and it doesn't matter, because he has held the cup. This is all about the team that he is facing tonight. I'm sorry Avalanche fans, but your team could lose to a few AHL teams right now (knock on wood, because now that I have said this, Colorado may score a few goals tonight.) Anyways, back to reality. The Av's are playing their third game in four nights and they got shut out by the Buffalo Sabres last evening. Ouch!! Ward and the Hurricanes haven't played since February 11th where they gave up five goals in Dallas. Before that, Ward won three starts in a row while giving up six goals in those three games. Not too shabby. The Avalanche own the league's worst offense and the Hurricanes are currently listed as -235 favorites according to Las Vegas. Ward is the only cash game play that we should consider today and as for GPP's, I feel that a lot of people will flock to Gibson because of his un-human like performance against the Wild, so Ward shouldn't be too popular this evening. Trust me and fire Cam Ward up in all formats folks.

CENTERS

Evgeni Malkin FD - $8500 DK - $7700
Opponent - CBJ
Proj Pts FD - 16.67 DK - 4.8

Everyone and their ancestors will be all over Sidney Crosby this evening and I can't blame them. Sid the Kid is a great play of course, but that's obvious. I present to you Evgeni Malkin, who is 100 % healthy again and has been unreal for the Pens in his last two games since coming back from an injury. The Russian star has two goals, two assists and seven shots on goal in those two games. The Blue Jackets are ranked fourth as a defensive unit, but a lot of their success was earlier in the season and Pittsburgh owns the league's #1 offense and fourth best PP unit. It's a toss up tonight between Sid the Kid and Malkin for cash games, but where I love this guy today is stacked with line-mates in GPP's, as I feel that they will be a lot less popular than Crosby's line.

Stack With: Patrick Hornqvist

Brandon Dubinsky FD - $5100 DK - $4600
Opponent - PIT
Proj Pts FD - 9.57 DK - 2.84

This guy has actually been outplaying his line-mate Cam Atkinson lately and is much cheaper as well. He didn't fire a shot on goal last game, but he still saved the day with an assist. In his last five games, Dubinsky has two goals, five assists, 10 shots on goal and five blocked shots. Pittsburgh is playing their third game in four nights and they're ranked 16th on defense. The total for tonight's game according to Vegas odds is six goals, so look for Dubinsky to get in on the action today. He is a great play in all formats and he allows you to fit a super-star or two into your lineups this evening.

Stack with: Cam Atkison, Boone Jenner

WINGERS

Sebastian Aho FD - $5900 DK - $4800
Opponent - COL
Proj Pts FD - 13.2 DK - 4.02

Do we have another star in the making here? I'm starting to think that it's a possibility and a lot of people still don't know who this kid is. We need to exposure to whoever is playing against Colorado and the Av's are playing their third game in four nights. In his last game, Aho scored a goal and fired a whopping eight shots on goal. That gives him five goals, an assist and 19 shots on goal in his last five games. He had a hat-trick five games ago, so he has large tourney winning upside as well as safety written all over him. Aho is a fantastic play today in all formats against the pathetic Avalanche.

Stack with: Elias Lindholm, Jordan Staal

Jonathan Huberdeau FD - $6200 DK - $5700
Opponent - ANA
Proj Pts FD - 14.32 DK - 4.27

Talk about stars. Maybe we will soon be able to add super in front of star for this guy. He has only played in four games because of a injury he sustained in preseason, but he came out of the gate on fire. He has scored in a point in every game he has played in and has three goals, four assists and 15 shots on goal during those four games. The Ducks are ranked fourth on defense and they recently shut out the Wild in Minnesota, but Gibson played unbelievable and also had lady luck on his side. Florida has been scoring goals lately and look for them to score a few tonight in Anaheim. At these low prices and his awesome production, Huberdeau is a great play in all formats this evening.

Stack with: Alexander Barkov, Jaromir Jagr

Also Consider: Corey Perry

DEFENSEMEN

Ian Cole FD - $4100 DK - $3500
Opponent - CBJ
Proj Pts FD - 8.37 DK - 2.41

On a small slate, if you are trying to get in some top players in cash games or in a stack for GPP's it will be important to find a few value plays tonight. As we always do here on DFSR we like to dig way down and find that value gem each night for your lineups. Tonight we turn to Ian Cole of the Penguins who admittedly doesn't come with much offensive upside but has a very high floor with some elite shot blocking skills. He has recorded four blocks in each of his last two games and has tallied 29 over his last 10 games with 11 shots and two assists. He is best used in cash games but on a small slate is nice salary relief option as well.

Justin Faulk FD - $5600 DK - $5600
Opponent - COL
Proj Pts FD - 11.07 DK - 3.61

Enter Justin Faulk who gets to skate against the lowly Avalanche today and he could make them look even sillier than they are. Faulk quarterback's the #1 power-play unit in Carolina and averages 22 minutes of ice time per game. Faulk scored a power-play goal last time out and he has two goals two assists, nine shots on goal and seven blocked shots in his last five games. He normally doesn't offer much upside, but today is an exception against Colorado, so fire this guy up in all formats.

  • it's amazing how there is zero NHL comments and NBA is like a firestorm. I asked awhile ago if there is any chance of unleashing an NHL optimizer??

  • Yes I am frustrated with that as well Dominic. I have heard through the grapevine that DFSR is currently working on an optimizer for NHL. That would be amazing. People like you can and I can help make NHL DFS more popular by telling everyone how awesome NHL is. Thanks for your comment and for reading and please spread the word about DFSR. We are simply trying to help people win money and enjoy the sports they love.

  • "Make DFS NHL Great Again"

    hahahaha.

I believe there is an optimizer being worked on or in the process of. No timetable at this moment. Stay tuned.

  • I took a risk and loaded up on this late game. What do you know? It's backfired as all these bums are scoring.
