Daily Fantasy Hockey Picks for FanDuel and DraftKings 3/19/17

Hello fellow hockey fans and welcome to another exciting day of NHL action at DFSR. We have a few high powered offenses in action today, as well as a few weak defenses that we can try and pick on. There are seven total games today with two separate slates on both sites, so we will be giving you a variety of picks for both slates. Let's get this party started.

Hockey is back and with it come our NHL projections which help inform these picks every night. GOALIES

Sergei Bobrovsky FD - $8900 DK - $8500
Opponent - NJ
Proj Pts FD - 15.93 DK - 3.98

Let's start with Bob the goalie who has been spectacular between the pipes lately.  The Jackets' offense has also been scoring a few goals which make his job a little easier. The Vezina trophy candidate has won his last six starts and he's posted eye-opening numbers with three shutouts and a .962 save %. He recorded his league leading 38th win in his last game while stopping 33 of 34 shots against the Panthers. This next part is even more convincing. Bob and the Jackets play the Devils who he earned consecutive shutouts against on March 5th and 7th. He stopped all 53 shots he faced in those two games. The Jackets are currently listed as a -155 road favorite and look for Bobrovsky to handle the Devils and their 28th ranked offense. Roster him with confidence in all formats today.

Scott Darling FD - $8600 DK - $8400
Opponent - COL
Proj Pts FD - 20.38 DK - 5.09

I will mention shortly how awful Colorado is on defense, well they are even worst on offense. They are ranked dead last in the NHL with 1.93 goals scored per game. This team would lose to most AHL teams right now and they are coming off of a 5-1 loss yesterday to a weak Detroit team. Darling is one of the best backups in the league and today he has shutout upside against the Avs. He has won his last five starts while allowing only six goals in those five games. That's impressive. Enough said. Darling is an elite play in all formats today.

CENTERS

Vincent Trocheck FD - $5600 DK - $6000
Opponent - PIT
Proj Pts FD - 12.52 DK - 3.61

The Penguins are going to be the chalk today for the tiny early slate, but if we want to take down a tourney or two, we obviously need to go contrarian. Trochek and the Panthers will be under-owned, but they are coming off of a nice 4-3 OT victory against a good Rangers squad. The young Russian centers the second line and the #2 PP unit in Florida. He has been held pointless two games in a row, but has fired seven shots on goal and had six assists in only four games before that. He has 22 goals and 27 assists this season and the Penguins have allowed eight goals in their last two games. Trochek is a good off beat GPP play today, so let's make a few lineups with him in them and see what happens.

Stack With: Reilly Smith, Jussi Jokinen

Eric Staal FD - $5700 DK - $5800
Opponent - WPG
Proj Pts FD - 0 DK - 0

The eldest Staal brother has been drinking from the fountain of youth lately and he is far from done. He has two goals and 16 shots on goal in his last two games and five goals and an assist in his last five games. The Jets are tied for third worst in the league in goals allowed per game (3.17) and they are a very undisciplined hockey team with serious goalie issues. Staal averages 19 minutes of ice time per game and he plays on the top line and #1 powerplay unit in Minny. If you're playing the three-game early slate on Draftkings, make sure you roster this guy with confidence in all formats.

Stack with: Nino Niederreiter, Zach Parise (PP)

Kyle Turris FD - $5500 DK - $5500
Opponent - MON
Proj Pts FD - 0 DK - 0

I watched the first game of this home and home series last night and wow, what a fast and exciting game it was. Montreal ended up winning 4-3 in a shootout and look for possibly an even higher scoring game today. Both backup goalies will be between the pipes today as Price and Anderson both played last night. Also, there tends to be more penalties taken in the tail end of a back-to-back series, so we need to try and roster guys who play a decent amount of powerplay time. Turris has a goal, an assist and eight shots on goal in his last two games and 12 shots in his last three games. He has average 19 minutes of ice time per game during that time. He also fired two shots off of the crossbar last night. Turris is a great play at his cheaper prices in all formats in what should be a high-scoring affair in Montreal this evening.

Stack with: Bobby Ryan, Zach Smith

WINGERS

Cam Atkinson FD - $7100 DK - $7400
Opponent - NJ
Proj Pts FD - 11.07 DK - 3.23

Here we have another somewhat contrarian play for the early slate. Everyone and their ancestors will be all over Pittsburgh today, so let's go with Atkinson, who plays on The Blue Jackets' top line and #1 PP unit. The young star in the making has three goals and nine shots in his last two games and he has monster upside potential against the Devils and their lowly 23rd ranked defense. Atkinson is great GPP play today.

Stack with: Brandon Dubinsky, Boone Jenner

Patrick Kane FD - $8800 DK - $8100
Opponent - COL
Proj Pts FD - 18.75 DK - 5.38

Oh my goodness, I've seen some bad teams play hockey, but Colorado is a disaster right now. The Blackhawks could probably score 10 goals today if they wanted to, so from a DFS perspective let's hope that they never let up. We need heavy exposure to Chicago today and it starts with their best player Patrick Kane. He was held pointless in Toronto last night but still fired five shots on goal. He was on a four-game point streak before that with two goals and five assists. The star winger also has a whopping 52 shots on goal in his last 12 games. Roster Kane with extreme confidence in all formats today against Colorado and their awful defense.

Stack with: Artemi Panarin, Jonathan Toews (PP,) Richard Panik (PP)

Paul Byron FD - $4200 DK - $3400
Opponent - OTT
Proj Pts FD - 5.6 DK - 1.55

There is a lot of value to be had in this huge rivalry game today and Byron is one guy that is way too cheap especially on Draftkings. This guy also rang two shots off the iron yesterday. He has three goals, an assist and eight shots on goal in his last three games and he played half of the overtime period in 3 on 3 action yesterday while blocking two shots. He's the fastest player the Habs have and he plays on the second line and the #1 powerplay unit. At near minimum price, Byron is a great play in all formats against the Sens.

Stack with: Brendan Gallagher, Alex Galchenyuk

DEFENSEMEN

Zach Werenski FD - $5600 DK - $5500
Opponent - NJ
Proj Pts FD - 9.21 DK - 2.73

New Jersey's defense has mailed it in for the year and Weresnki has been on fire lately, so it makes a ton of sense to write about him today. You want upside? Check. Safety? Check. This an easy choice then. This kid is on fire as he is on a five-game point streak with two goals, five assists, 15 shots and four blocks during that streak. Werenski QB's the #1 powerplay for Columbus and he is a great play in all formats today.

Ivan Provorov FD - $3900 DK - $4400
Opponent - CAR
Proj Pts FD - 8.4 DK - 2.47

Welcome back young man after fading away into thin air for a little while. Rookies do that now and then as they adjust to the big leagues so there are no worries with the future superstar. The Flyers are out of the playoff picture so they bumped the young Russian up to the #1 powerplay which adds a ton of value as he plays with superstars such as Giroux, Simmonds and Voracek. He is simply too cheap at these prices with the safety and now the upside he offers. He has a powerplay assist, three shots and eight blocks in his last two games. He now has five goals, 20 assists 134 shots and 146 blocks in 70 games. That's steady as a rock for a rookie. Provorov is safe in all formats today against the Hurricanes.
