Daily Fantasy Hockey Picks for FanDuel and DraftKings 1/19/17

Welcome back hockey fans. After a busy night in the National Hockey League, we have a much smaller three-game slate tonight with three teams(VEG, LA, WAS) playing the second of a back to back. Let's jump in and take a look at some of the top plays at each position.

Hockey is back and with it come our NHL projections which help inform these picks every night. When you purchase a DFSR NHL subscription to our base hockey projections you also get access to our brand new NFL DFS suite of tools including full projections, optimal NFL lineups and our Player Lab, which includes filters to help you create NFL lineups for FanDuel and DraftKings for any format. It’s a set of tools well beyond anything we’ve ever had, and something we feel will help our users *ahem* tackle the NFL season.

GOALIE

Philipp Grubauer FD - $7900 DK - $8100
Opponent - MON
Proj Pts FD - 14.94 DK - 3.74

From a goalie perspective, this slate has a GPP only feel as there is no heavy home favorite. If you are playing cash games, I suggest rolling with Grubauer who is already confirmed to start for the Caps who are playing at home after losing in overtime last night in New Jersey. The good news is that Grubaeuer has been money on home ice as the backup going 3-1 in four starts with an elite .946 save % and gets a prime matchup vs. the struggling Habs who have lost eight of their last 10 games overall scoring just 19 goals and have a disappointing 7-13-1 road record.

Also Consider: Malcolm Subban(VGK) for GPP formats

CENTERS

Vincent Trocheck FD - $6800 DK - $6300
Opponent - VEG
Proj Pts FD - 15.77 DK - 4.51

Center is a tough position tonight on a small slate so ride with the player who provides us the highest floor. Over the past 10 games, Trocheck has fired 43 shots on goal while adding eight points and on the season is averaging 3.6 shots per game and gets a ton of opportunity skating over 21 minutes per game on the second line and top powerplay unit. Vegas has been good defensively this season but will be playing the second of a back to back and third game in four nights, all on the road. Fire up Trocheck in all formats.

PP Stack with: Aleksander Barkov, Jonathan Huberdeau

Ryan Getzlaf FD - $7500 DK - $6400
Opponent - LA
Proj Pts FD - 12.99 DK - 3.77

The Regina, Saskatchewan product is, by no means, a safe play with his 1.8 shots per game average on the season but makes a nice high upside GPP play tonight. He has been very consistent for the Ducks with points in 12 of his last 15 games and sits with 26 points over his 22 games played. He skates on the top line and powerplay unit and while the Kings have a good defense, are also playing the second of a back to back. He is best used in a stack with his linemates Corey Perry and Rickard Rakell and you can also throw in Cam Fowler on defense who joins them on the top powerplay unit.

Stack with: Rickard Rakell, Corey Perry

WINGERS

Alex Ovechkin FD - $8800 DK - $8100
Opponent - MON
Proj Pts FD - 17.09 DK - 4.95

The "Great 8" is by far the most talented player on the slate and it will be very hard to fade him on a small, three-game slate. The good news is that he provides us with elite shot volume as he leads the league with 4.3 shots per game on the season and has also been hot lately with five goals and 12 points in his last 10 games(playing right now). While the Caps are playing the second of a back to back they get a plus matchup vs. the Habs who have been terrible lately losing eight of their last 10 games while giving up 32 goals and have a 7-13-1 road record on the season. Despite the heavy chalk, Ovi is my top skater tonight.

Stack with: Nicklas Backstrom, T.J. Oshie(PP)

Alex Galchenyuk FD - $5600 DK - $4900
Opponent - WAS
Proj Pts FD - 10.28 DK - 3.05

On the other side of this game, I like Alex Galchenyuk for value to help fit Ovi and other higher end players tonight. The offense for Galchenyuk like most of the Habs team has been very inconsistent this season but Galchenyuk has provided a nice floor lately with 30 shots in his last 10 games and points in four of his last six games. The pickings are slim tonight so fire up Galchenyuk in all formats and while he skates on the team's listed third line, he jumps up and skates with Pacioretty and Gallagher on the top powerplay unit.

Stack with: Jonathan Drouin, Brendan Gallagher(PP), Max Pacioretty(PP)

Also Consider: Reilly Smith(VEG)

DEFENSEMEN

Jeff Petry FD - $4100 DK - $4900
Opponent - WAS
Proj Pts FD - 9.17 DK - 2.73

With Shea Weber on injured reserve, Jeff Petry continues to get a ton of opportunities skating on the top pairing and powerplay unit. He has just five points over his last 10 games but has provided a very high floor with 37 shots and 13 blocks while skating over 24 minutes per game. He is the top play from a PTS/$ standpoint tonight on this small slate, especially on FanDuel at just $4,100.

Alec Martinez FD - $4700 DK - $4700
Opponent - ANA
Proj Pts FD - 11 DK - 3.36

To get Ovi and other top forwards into your lineup you will likely have to roll two value D-men tonight and while Martinez doesn't offer a ton of upside, he does provide safety. He has been a shot-blocking machine lately and has multiple blocks in 10 straight games(30 total) to go along with 19 shots and three points. He has also been seeing over 25 minutes of ice-time on the second pairing and powerplay unit.

Also Consider: John Carlson(WSH) for GPP formats if you want to pay up tonight.
