Stacking in DFS MLB is such an important concept if you’re looking to take down a big tournament on FanDuel or DraftKings. It’s also a good way to diversify cash games because the variance in baseball can mean wild swings (ahem) in the scoring on a particular slate. The concept is easy. You want to pile players from one or two teams into your lineups because those guys compound scores by helping each other score runs when the going is good.

Stack Targets

Texas Rangers vs. Mike Pelfrey (Tigers)
Park - Comerica Park

The Rangers are easily my favorite stack in this early slate and it is not too hard for me. The early slate is playing out very nicely for me as I am going with David Price, as many Rangers as I can fit and whoever else that fits. Mike Pelfrey is on his way out of the league and is going to win a few guys some tournaments on the way to the door. In 2016, Pelfrey has given up a .401 wOBA to righties and lefties. In his 5 starts, he has given up 16 earned runs and walked 15 batters. While this ballpark isn't great, it is neutral for left handed hitters and slightly above for righties. My favorite 5 Rangers are Rougned Odor, Prince Fielder, Mitch Moreland, Nomar Mazara and Ian Desmond. These guys offer you with plenty of upside in a ton of different ways. If you forced me t pick 4 for FanDuel, I would get rid of Mazara.

Atlanta Braves vs. Shelby Miller (Diamondbacks)
Park - Turner Field

The Atlanta Braves stack is something I rarely ever employ. These guys are not great hitters and do not have much power. However, Shelby Miller has a way of turning every left handed hitter into Babe Ruth. Miller is a guy who had a great season last yer due to BABIP and a ton of luck. His numbers are evening out this year with 22 earned runs in 23 innings. This Braves team will likely employ 6 or lefties and all of them provide upside in a separate way. My 5 favorite are Freddie Freeman, A.J. Pierzynski, Kelly Johnson, Nick Markakis and Ender Inciarte who looks like he will return from his injury tonight. I do prefer this stack in large field tournaments and not 100 man leagues as you will not need such a contrarian approach in those. However, in large field tournaments this stack will go extremely low owned and has a great chance to go off.

Tampa Bay Rays vs. Jered Weaver (Angels)
Park - Angel Stadium

The Rays enter this game coming off a win last night and will get the honor of facing Jered Weaver. As mentioned a few times throughout our articles today, Weaver is another pitcher on his way out with an 83 MPH fastball. I expect the Rays to tee off against Weaver in this one with the righties and lefties both doing a ton of damage. This team is a great team to stack as they have guys that get on base, guys that can steal bases and a few that can drive them all in with a single swing. In 2015, Weaver gave up a combined .333 wOBA and that will only decline with his velocity dropping and age rising. He has already shown regression this year as he has given up 4 earned runs or more in 3 of his 5 games. My favorite Tampa bats are Corey Dickerson, Logan Forsythe, Evan Longoria, Kevin Kiermaier and Brad Miller. These guys all offer upside in different way and provide an opportunity for all of them to have great games at the same time which is what we are looking for.

  • If the Rangers were such a great stack early, why did the optimizer keep giving me the Dodgers?
