Daily Fantasy MLB Pitchers for FanDuel & DraftKings 8/30/16

Welcome to our new daily article breaking down some of the other pitching targets on this slate. We covered our system's top value plays in our daily picks article but here we will look at other dudes to consider.

In case you didn’t notice, on Saturday we released our brand new NFL DFS suite of tools including full projections, optimal NFL lineups and Player Lab which includes filters to help you create NFL lineups for FanDuel and DraftKings. It’s a robust set of tools; well beyond anything we’ve ever had and something we feel will help our users *ahem* tackle the NFL season.

Using tools like these for the NFL season is crucial and you can grab a free 2 WEEK trial to test out yourself.

A quick heads up - we post an updates article every day in the early afternoon, EST, to catch everyone up on how things are changing as a result of whatever news has come through. We also have great talks in the comments of that article. Hope to see you there!

Pitching Targets

Note: We discussed Max Scherzer and Johnny Cueto in the Main Article and will be going over a few more options below.

Pitching Targets

Drew Pomeranz FD 9000 DK 11600
Opponent - TB (Odorizzi) Park - @BOS
FD - 36.74 DK - 23.99

Talk about a guy that came out of nowhere! Before the start of the season, I don't think I had ever heard of, Drew Pomeranz! This kid is real [good] and is an excellent play today. He'll be going up against a Rays' offense that has really struggled against southpaws. They own a .313 wOBA (23rd in MLB) to go along with a whooping 25.7 K% (highest in MLB) against lefties this season. You're trying to get away from the "chalk" of the day, Max Scherzer, well don't look any further! A strikeout prone offense meets a guy that fans 27% of the batters he faces! Pomeranz' upside is through the roof and I love him for tournaments today.

Cole Hamels FD 10300 DK 11500
Opponent - SEA (Paxton) Park - @TEX
FD - 34.06 DK - 22.49

I guess we will stick to theme here and go from one southpaw to another. This time we will be looking at 32-year-old, Cole Hamels. The veteran is still putting up great numbers and it's safe to say he has been drinking from the fountain of youth. I feel like he's been in the league for 40 years and he's still killing it out there.

Today, Cole draws an appealing matchup against the Mariners. Not only have they struggled against southpaws (21st in wOBA against lefties), but they have also had some trouble at the plate as of late. In their last 14 contests, they own a .300 wOBA (23rd in MLB) along with a .145 ISO (24th in MLB). They have struggled making contact as well as hitting for power, so go ahead and roster Hamels in tournaments today. He will be low owned and has some big upside! Just look at his game log!

Collin McHugh FD 7900 DK 6000
Opponent - OAK (Graveman) Park - @HOU
FD - 31.56 DK - 20.68

I could keep going down the list with other expensive pitchers, but instead I thought I'd give you a cheaper option. And that is Collin McHugh.

I know you might call me crazy because he owns a 5.01 ERA, but he's been a much better than his ERA suggests. Just look at his xFIP. It's all the way at 3.92! He's had some bud luck (opponents own .365 BABIP) so don't worry about his ERA. This kid is good, and even has some upside -- with a 22.7 K%.

Not only is he a much better pitcher than his ERA suggests, but he also has a beautiful matchup. He'll be going up against the fanning A's!

"Fanning?! What!! Nick, the A's own a K% under 20%!" I know that, but in their last 14 contests, they own a whooping 23.7 K% (7th in MLB). Not only that, but they have continued to struggle with the bats, as they also own a .296 wOBA (25th in MLB). This team has struggled all season long and it has not been any better as of late, so go ahead and take a chance on McHugh.

  • Great advice. I wouldn't have personally considered the flyer on McHugh but that makes sense as a cheaper option. Thanks guys!

  • I'm really torn between McHugh and Graveman for a Pitcher 2 on the cheap. I hear and get what you're saying on McHugh, but over his last couple of outings, Graveman has pitched well against ChiSox, Cleveland & Baltimore. The big difference is that McHugh has much better K upside. Both offenses (Oakland & Houston) pretty much rely on their right handed power hitters, but don't have much success against RHP. Because he's pitching at home, I think I'll lean toward McHugh.

  • I'm right with you there, James. Graveman has been great as well and looks good tonight. I give the slight edge to McHugh. Based on what you said and HOU offense is better. Don't mind the Gravenan move one bit

  • Big fan of your website! I always take at least one cheap pitcher on DraftKings and sometimes two, so I appreciate you including a guy like McHugh today. Please add a "bargain pitcher" of the day to your article or something to that effect. Thank you for all the great advice all year.
